So, I upgraded from 384K to a 4M ADSL line today and it's giving me problems. It works normally for about 20-30 seconds and then the connection drops to 0;

Tests:
1. Online FPS game - timeout after 20-30 secs
2. VPN to work - stable for 20-30 seconds and just dies
3. Nvidia driver download - speed 400K for 30 secs and then drops to 1K and then resumes after a few seconds again.

Any ideas what might be causing this? I Phoned Telkom, they put me hold and after that told me to monitor the line for 3 hours. (I see they droppped the speed to 3808 - Or so the router says)

Probably battling to Sync at 4Mb/s. Your line might not be up to.

Not much of a drop there. Mine was dropped to 3072 kbps (as I requested them to do) and is much more stable now.

Ding, you are correct sir. Well almost.

I quickly unplugged everything except the router and now she is burning cap like nothing. Turns out that for some reason the telephone and the router on the same line does not work well together.

Are your adsl filters good? I have endless hassles with them during lightning season and keep spare ones in the drawer :)

All devices connecting to the line will add to the attenuation of the circuit. So less devices would be better as you have found out :)

I have no idea, i have been using the same filter for about 6 months now. I have a couple of spares ones here. Will give them a bash tomorrow.

Is there something Telkom can do to fix it? I mean, I have to choose now, between having the phone or the router on at teh moment. lol

Maybe, but it's going to cost you I suspect.

It could be your indoor wiring. Ive had that before.

It could also be the outdoor wiring between your house and the exchange. I've had a suspect dropwire (pole to house) once. Fortunately for me I had a newer second dropwire for an isdn line I no longer used wich they switched me over to.

They could also check all the jumpers between you house and the exchange and replace them with new ones.

Have them do a LTS line test to your house and give you a copy of the results (if they will).

Do you know the cable distance to your house? LTS test will tell you that.

Fortunately for me I've never had to pay for anything, don't ask.

The drop line is about 15+ meters. I think I should get them out to the house to replace the drop line and the little box inside the house, which is about 7/8 years old as well.

Ask them to check all your jumpers along the way to the exchange as well.
