Connection fine - but unable to browse - time-out errors etc.

Hi all

My internet connection seems to have become very flaky of late ... the actual line itself seems to be fine - and the internet connection constant - but web browsing has sporadically become a nightmare at times - intermittent time-outs, "connection to the server was reset" errors in Firefox, pages not resolving ... and whilst all of this is happening email & other non-browsing activities all work fine.

I've tried both Telkom & Afrihost as ISPs and get the same issue - and also switched to using Google's DNS server rather than the ISP appointed one

Any idea what is causing this ? The intermittent nature is what is most infuriating ... sometimes it fixes itself, other times a router reset does it ... but then the problem re-surfaces later ...

Ideas ?

Thanks

Hi,

Log in on your ADSL modem and post your ADSL statistics here. Ensure that you include the line attenuation, noise/SNR margins and line speeds - both for upstream and downstream. If your ADSL modem can also show the mode that it is in (ADSL2+/G.DMT), post that too.

Secondly, post a trace route to like www.google.co.za here.
To do that, open Command Prompt and run the following command inside the Command Prompt window:
tracert www.google.co.za

If the trace route failed to resolve www.google.co.za, then run the 3 following commands and post the output here:
nslookup www.google.co.za
nslookup www.google.co.za 8.8.8.8
tracert -d 74.125.233.19

Thanks Pada

ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 4096 kbps 512 kbps
Line Attenuation 46 db 13.5 db
Noise Margin 12 db 12 db

The router doesn't show what mode it is in ( older NetGear DG834 )

*Tracert failed to resolve

nslookup www.google.co.za
DNS request timed out
timeout was 2 seconds
Server: unknown
Address: 8.8.8.8

nslookup www.google.co.za 8.8.8.8

tracert -d 74.125.233.19

Just tried a separate machine on my network and got tracert to work

Results below:

mitchmagi,
it seems to me like the first PC has a static IP address with an incorrect gateway, because your 2nd PC is working just fine.
Make sure that your first PC has its IP settings set to 'Obtain an IP address automatically'.

Running a 4Mbps connection with a downstream line attenuation of 46dB is also taking a chance.
I'm actually surprised that your ADSL modem reports its SNR margins as 12dB. My Netgear DG834GUv5 can't even get a stable 4Mbps connection with a downstream line attenuation of 40dB.

Hi Pada

Thanks - got the tracert working on the first machine now ( firewall issue which I've now disabled )

Been running 4mbps on the line for years without issue. The tracert closely mirrors as above

Thanks
