Hi there

I frequently get connection problems followed by disconnects from the server during games like Battlefield 1942 and Call of Duty. I play these games on local servers and when I exit to desktop I see my connection is still intact.

This is becoming increasingly annoying as it is happening more frequently. Any ideas as to why?

No ideas? Have I posted this in the wrong forum? Sorry, I'm new to this board.

The only suggestion I can make is that there a problem on SGS's side because as you say, your internet connection is working, so the problem is an inbound connection, not outbound.

Hey Lotus hzt and Welcome.
I have it aswell and dont have a clue why.....[:D]

What really gets me is that in BF1942 I will always disconnect, but in CoD it will hang and hang and then, if I'm still alive, will continue with the game or will show the spawn interface. I think I read somewhere that the connection runs in a circle from JHB to Durban to CT and back so if one of those links gets temporarily severed you lose the connection or flow of data.

Welcome to the wonderful world of port shaping. LOL. You're busy playing, and your neighbour begins a download of a 20 MB file at full speed. He gets priority and you suffer. What we need to do is to get SAIX to host all games on port 80 or 21. I have proved this with me and my neighbour, and work, and is the main reason that I cancelled the ADSL crap and went back to dialup. Using dialup, I can play BZFlag in Denmark at about 285 ms lag, where with ADSL it was a minimum of 320 spiking up to 780 lag. Rediculous.

Ah yes, shaped and unshaped. We should be able to get decent pings of around 100 - 150 on international servers, but alas...

Unshaped accounts work really well for International gaming with pings ranging from 150-300 depending on location. Unlike a shaped account the latency doesn't jump all over the place, it's very consistent. Only problem is that a unshaped account costs and arm and a leg.

Hi Lotus
Strange that its happening on the local servers, i'm not aware of anyone else having these issues on the COD server. Though the addon initially had an unstable server, seems to b ok now, except for the lag on the bigger maps with vehicles.

Black Louts, I am getting similar problems. I suggest you take a look at your firewall log to see what is on the go. Mine tell me that there is the occassional UDP flooding which is taking place. Seems like it could be incoming or outgoing. I have a packet sniffer ready for the next time I play... but then as Murphy has it, it probably wont happen.

Hmm, been happening more often now, over seven times tonight. I called my ISP and Telkom and both agree that I should swap out the router... here's hoping it solves it.
