Hi everyone,

I am using Vista and have a Neotel Prime connection. I am using FDM to dll and constantly have to check the connection. I have stopped using the Neotel Connection Manager (after reading the forum), and have set the dial-up to auto connect if the connection drops.

The Windows connection is showing as being connected but internet is non-existent. I have to disconnect and reconnect to get the connection to work again.

Any suggestions?

This seems to be a common problem with neotel when you leave the connection running for a long period of time. I still haven't found a solution but found if i delete and recreate the dialup connection it happens less frequently.

Yes seems to be whenever your internet connection is idle it disconnects and redials when needed again.

Since I have been running mIRC I hardly get any disconnections, seems as long as there is activity the connection does not drop.

Thanks for the response guys. My FDM is constantly running with some sort of download and the line dropping is the frustration. I will try running mIRC in the background and see what happens.

Thanks again!

In the Dial Up connection properties, have you set things like redial if line is dropped, mayb 2 mins between redial attempts and maybe disconnect if idle after 4 hours. I've had no problems with this in Vista.

Have you reported the problem to our customer services, with the technical details? E-mail is probably better than a call to explain properly. I'll follow up with the appropriate technical support people - ideally we need feedback from anyone who have had a similar experience in order to correlate and identify where your problem is.

I've had the same problem. When playing online games my connection dies. I then have to disconnect. Then when I try connect I get an error (7** error...can't remember exact number). I try connect again various times and it usually ends up in me having to remove the phone from my usb port and stick it back in before a connection can be made.

PeteGT - I have changed my dial-up settings so that it redials whenever the connection is dropped. Redial attempts is 99 times, time between retry is 1 minute and the connection is set to "never disconnect". Still have the same issue.

Neotel Rep - I wanted to see whether the problem was hardware related (the phone) or whether the problem relates to software (Vista/Freedownload Manager). Like Venom, I too have received 637 errors. This is however a consistency issue. If FDM is busy downloading, then in my mind the connection should never drop and if it does drop, then the dial-up should automatically kick in and redial. This does however not happen and a human hand is needed.

I will try and set the dial-up manager within FDM, try using mIRC and even re-installing the dial-up before giving Neotel a call. It might be a software issue so I do not want to judge unfairly.

At 2pm I opened up FDM and started downloading. At 3:50pm, FDM stopped downloading because "The server does not respond". The internet did not want to work because "there is no internet conncetion". The dial-up icon showed that I was connected to the Neotel network.

I disconnected from the Neotel network and reconnected. FDM started downloading with no problem.

I guess the next option is to log a call with Neotel. Watch this space!

Just some feedback on what happened today.

I took the modem to work and used it on my work laptop (XP). The same problem occured. A Neotel technician phoned me and as we walked through the modem drivers, we noticed that the modem (per the control panel) was using a different COM port than Windows System. After uninstalling everything, re-installing the modem drivers and changing the COM ports to be the same, it appeared as if the XP machine was working fine. Some connection errors were however noticed after the fresh install, but for most of the day the connection was fine.

The same can however not be said for Vista. The technician will phone me tomorrow and I will post more info after the call.

I have screen shots that I would like to post. Can anyone give me help on how to do that?

PS: The Neotel technician was very friendly and patient (we were on the phone for about an hour while walking through the process). Well done Edward!

Glad to see the Neotel Technicians have been helpful :)

Another update...

There does not seem to be a solution. I told Edward that Neotel need to setup a test box, install the drivers and find a reason as to why the connection keeps dropping. I am experiencing the same problem with Vista and XP on two different machines so the problem is definitely with Neotel.

Once I get a response back or a possible driver upgrade I will let you guys know.

+1 for Neotel here. As early adopters we are bound to be walking where Angels fear to tread. At least Neotel, from my own experience too, is prepared to help resolve quality of service issues.

Say what you want, you'll never get this from Helkom.

Have you guys tried another PPP dailer like RasPPPoe?

I had no idea what a PPP caller was, so I googled it....

http://www.raspppoe.com/

It says that the the program should be used for "method for establishing PPP connections through Ethernet adapters ". If the Neotel device is using USB, does that make a difference?

Not sure as I don't have a Neotel modem myself.

Does the Neotel modem create a logical interface under network connections?

I am sorry to say but I have no idea (to technical for me)...going to install it tonight and see if the line has dropped between tonight and tomorrow morning. I will give feedback then.

Thanks for the help!

:D

Maybe someone else can check because if it does create a logical interface you can download Wireshark and do a trace on that interface. Then I can have a look at the trace and see where the disconnect is coming from.
