Connection problems HELP

Hi all,

Newbe on here and not what you would call a technical type of guy but i need your help.

I recently moved into a new property and have got my broadband up and running no problem. I am with Tiscali 1mb package as we are out in the sticks abit and thats all the phone line can support.
However at about 7pm each night the connection drops and doesn't connect again untill i retry the next morning! anyway after many weeks of head scratching i have realised what is causing it....

In the garden there are some outside lights (the ones the light up trees etc) all are 12v lights running from the garage electrics which has its own consumer unit which of course in turn is powered by the house electrics. The lights are on a standard mechanical timer and as soon as they turn on the broadband connection dies.
The BT line still supports voice calls with no loss of quality but it is impossibe to get a broadband connection with the lights on. As soon as you switch them of hey presto were connected again.

I simply cannot understand what the link is. The BT phone line into the house is on the same wall as the main electricity supply but it is at least 12 feet away so surely there is no interference here.

It doesnt matter whether i am connected to the router by cables or wirelessly the line still drops.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

cables arent somehow getting crossed? lights electrical frequency could be putting the DSL into a spin...? you need to determine whether the problem is outside of your house or inside with the wiring. if its inside itll be easy to divert the tel cable away from your current electricy units etc by routing it somewhere else... good luck in your analysis
 
You could try to reduce the speed of your connection to 512kbps - this should increase your downstream SNR margin and the problem may disappear.

Can you give any more information about the type of lights and particularly the power supply to the lights?

You could also try an RFI filter between the power supply to the lights and the mains outlet. Unfortunately these are not cheap ~25 Pounds or so. Another option would be to use a different power supply unit (preferably a different brand) for the 12V lights - this may be cheaper than an RFI filter. If the lights flash then you could also try to use a suppression capacitor.

Here are some links regarding RFI filters. You need to make sure that the RFI filter can handle the current that is drawn by the power supply to the lights. Read the comments on that Amazon link - problem very similar to yours. If you plan to buy anything make sure that you can return it if it doesn't fix the problem!
