Hi All,

Just wondering whether other people too are seeing their connections being reset all over the show for no apparent reason? I did a little investigation and it looks like "the network" is generating RSTs in both directions on TCP connections but I don't know whether this is an isolated incident (ie, just me) or whether it's more widespread.

Slightly more detailed information at http://jkroon.blogs.uls.co.za/it/security/cell-c-following-in-the-footsteps-of-vodacom

Thanks,
Jaco

Not to detract from the original problem, but kinda ironic that the above server is refusing connections to port 80 at the moment ;-)

Were you using Cell C mobile by any chance? A RST packet in response to a SYN packet would result in you seeing "connection refused" on your side. I'm not sure whether Internet Explorer differentiates between connection reset and connection refused either. And the above link works perfectly fine for me. Nor do I see that there were at any point problems in the logs. Note however that IS has reported MPLS problems in rosebank, which under certain circumstances can mean that the bryanston IDC become inaccessible from certain other parts of world. But that's a different fight which I fight with them directly.

Also please note that Cell C has already contacted me and have indicated that they did in fact have issues over the weekend, the person who contacted me seemed quite keen to get as much technical information as possible in an attempt to fix the problem permanently (it does seem to have resolved itself during the night as I weren't able to reproduce with one or two connection attempts this morning). What we couldn't confirm was whether the particular issue the person referred to and this issue was in fact related or not (he could only confirm that he himself had problems with DNS resolution).

Kudus to Cell C for responding very quickly and looking to be actively attempting to improve their network. Time will tell how effective they are at this. So far my experience is much more positive than it was with Vodacom.
