***** URGENT HELP APPRECIATED ******

My needs are pretty simple, and yet, despite having some LAN skilz, I cannot get my connection shared with the PCs on my network.

My ADSL router is connected to a win2k server which has the dual NICs: one for the LAN and the other connected by crossover to the router.

I can get ADSL access on the server when I disable the LAN connection, but not on any of the "client" PCs (2 WinXP and 1 Linux). The PCs cannot even ping the router (not too suprising, really). I have shared the router connection and reverted the LAN connection to 192.168.0.1 as required by the windows shared connection.

what DNS should the LAN use? the ISPs DNS? WOuld this be easier to organise if I put the router on the LAN hub?

I have had this configuration working before so I know that it is theoretically possible (win2k server with winXP clients).

PS. i am well aware that this process would be more seamless using XP as my server, but that is not a possibility.

Urgent help much appreciated.

If ur using internet conection shareing with win2kS you need to specify DNS servers on your client machines. i use the following SAIX DNS
196.25.1.9
196.43.1.14

also specify a the gateway as your servers internal ip address

I am not sure if this is valid.

Try setup your server as a proxy and make use a proxy client software to connect your clients to the internet via the proxy.

I never tried ADSL as a company internet connection so I am not sure how the dynamic IP will effect the proxy software.

Hi blodot,

I've spent the last 4-6 days trying to get my VPN working with this exact scenario.

What your best option is, and easiest to maintain is the following:

1) Setup your server as a DHCP server (set the dhcp gateway to server's ip, you can make the server ip = 172.16.0.1 and start dhcp range from 172.16.0.10 up to 172.16.0.100)
2) Setup your server as a DNS server
3) Set your Internet NIC to IP - 192.168.10.100, Gateway - 192.168.10.200, DNS - 196.25.1.1, 196.25.1.9 (or whatevery it is you use).
4) Set your workstations to recieve everything automatically.

This will work. I've had problem accepting incoming requests to my FTP and HTTP server, but i was using a different OS to you. I know someone who said that windows 2000 server works. You'll also need to forward whichever ports you'd like to accept in your PAT on your router.

I also have a pdf with more details, if you'd like it, send me a mail.

Just had the telkom guys over, the new router didn't seem to help. I wonder why nothing seems to be routed through... Got some more technical guys coming over on Monday to have a look at it. Hopefully they will be able to shed some light on it.

Preferably, get Win2k Advanced server installed, because that will give you a proper routing service:

My set-up works like this:
Win 2k Advanced server with 2 NICs, one to network, one to ADSL modem
Set-up DHCP to issue IP addresses to your clients on a private network like 192.168.xx or 10.x.x.x (DHCP is required to use NAT)
Dish out the DNS to the clients from the DHCP server as well.
Your server must of course be the default gateway for your clients.

Set up Routing and Remote Access Server. Don't use ICS! Use the other option - I forget what its called.
You then set-up one NIC (the one connected to ADSL) as Internet access and the other as internal network.
It will then do NAT for you.

I also advise to use raspppoe to handle the connection (available under www.raspppoe.com). Works beautifully, and gives you dial-on-demand.

And another benefit: it will count every byte that goes through ADSL no matter from what client - helps you check whether Telkoms meter is right.

Hi paf,

I had everything working and setup like that, but also had AD installed. I couldn't get it all working using Dialup though, only with the router as always on.

What was i missing on the server to get the client PC's to connect to the internet? Everything was passed across correctly by the DHCP server.

Well, in the last 24 hours, (from 21:00 last night), my line has been down for 75.443 minutes.

This upgraded modem sure isn't what I was hoping for. It also now takes about 4 minutes to dsl link to resync.

Why does all the money have to go into someone's back pocket rather than improving their products and services.

Yeah, AD is a bitch. I remember installing SP4, and suddenly needing to go AD on everything. Got authorisation errors configuring DHCP - in a word, the installation was screwed. I was seriously pissed off, didn't have the patience to investigate any further so I trashed the whole thing and started again. Sorry Syntax-in an AD environment, I wouldn't know what the problem is.

I appear to currently have everything working using the following:

PPOE connection on DHCP and shared to LAN, and LAN connection therefore automatically set to 192.168.0.1 to which I have added in my Telkom DNS 196.25.1.1.

Clients were then set to DHCP throughout and seemed to be working fine. I then cut the clients over to fixed IPs from DHCP, because I require this to get some of the other network functions working, and they seemed to go right on working. This had not worked before, so I dunno what I did right.

Sadly I think was related to rebooting the W2k server in between fiddling with the IP configs!!

And great many thanks to everyone who responded to my original query.

PS. Downloaded Mandrake 9.1 (3 CDs) and three versions of OpenOffice RC3 and hit my 3GB cap in 2 days!!
