Connection stability issues, is it Telkom or me?

Hi Icarium

I don't think your problem is quite the same as ours.

With ours (at the Kelvin exchange) every 15 minutes my dsl connection drops, monitoring my router I can see that it doesn't lose the DSL signal from the exchange and doesn't re-sync or anything which is weird buy my entire router just disconnects. Ive actually got this timed down to the second now, according to my router every 16 minutes and 04 seconds it happens and always takes around 2 mins 20 seconds to reconnect

Then it works perfectly for another 16 mins and 04 secs and happens again.

Whats intresting is if i unplug my router for exactly 5 minutes and plug it back in it will connect for exactly 11 minutes and 04 seconds and disconnect (5 mins + 11 mins 04 secs = 16 mins 04 secs) and then will repeatedly do it according to schedule again. It's almost like they've done something to schedule it.

This has been repeatedly going on since Saturday morning when I first noticed the problem

(I've tried two different routers on my line and they both do exactly the same thing, reading what's been happening to the other ppl at the same exchange It sounds identical which Is why I'm convinced the problem is there.)

I've also attempted to communicate this info across to Telkom but they just don't understand what im telling them and want to continually recreate my port on the exchange which seems to be there standard way of resolving dsl issues.

Regards

P.s I've also just logged the problem on https://secure1.telkom.co.za/ADSLFaultReports/index.do , maybe everyone else having the same problem could do the same, perhaps the people who read the online tickets can help more than the call centre agents, you never know. (Just specifically mention the exchange in your ticket and maybe after the 6th one they will realise that there is actually a problem here)

Yeah that does sound a lot more specific than my problems over the last couple of days.

(Un)fortunately mother nature solved my connection issues by turning the box that both my lines are connected to into a fused lump of metal this morning. Certainly makes it easier to convince Telkom there's a line problem.

I have the same problem, also been timing the connection on my firewall. i also live by Kelvin so i use their exchange. Logged a fault with Telkom, now its just a waiting game....

im gonna drive past there this afternoon with a bottle of brandy. it will be fixed by tonight.

I've just checked now and I've been connected for 23 minutes so far

I'm cautiously optimistic that something has been done to resolve the issue

Lets hope it stays connected

Looking at the logs of my download manager it looks like I haven't had a disconnect since about 12:20, so that's almost 40mins with no drop. That's better so I wonder if it's been fixed, can anyone else comment?

Think I'll still phone them later to check up.

Problem fixed perhaps?

I was experiencing the same problems and I'm connected to the kelvin exchange aswell, but for the past 30 minutes I'm finding my internet alot more stable.. Ping times to google.co.za are abit unstable ranging from 300ms - 600ms when they should be around 200ms but atleast my internet isn't dropping, anyone else finding it better?

Mine is better, been connected for 1hr 30min now

I haven't noticed any problems again yet. Do you have another ISP account to use to make sure it isn't Axxess?

We are in PTA Queenswood area and our connection is crappy too! Really irritating to have to keep hitting the refresh button :(

Suggest you go through the process then:

Phone them and ask about the exchange and whether there is a known problem on yours.

See if your line is losing sync, you can stay logged into your router and whenever you lose the connection quickly check your router to see if the line is down. (My router says that DSL is "up", yours might have a different way of saying it. If it mentions your sync rate, e.g. 384k/128k that's what you look at.

You can also run RouterStats (or RouterStats Lite if your modem supports it, which is easier to setup), which will graph your sync speed and noise margin over time, if it drops to zero you have lost sync obviously.

If you are losing sync you need to have Telkom send out a technician to try fixing it. If you can, test with a different router just to make sure it's not that (they will tell you it may be your router and you want to be able to rule that out asap). Also if your router is attached to a lightning protector try plugging straight into the wall, as they will also claim that as a possibility so you must be able to rule that out too. Afaik a dodgy microfilter is also a possibility so try another one of those if you can.

In the mean time while waiting for the tech (if need be) you can call 0800 375 375 (ADSL line suppport) and ask them to reset your port, it may help.

Hopefully I didn't just type all that up for nothing. ;)

I know it's been a while but,

it's totally totally completely up to 5#!t here again, any of you?

Sometimes lightning causes problerms at the exchange I heard, but "lightning in the area" can also fry your pots filter easily, sometimes its as simple as that especialy if you have some noises when using the telephone.
