Connection Via Ethernet

I'm very new to iBurst, having started using their service since Friday. I connect to Kempton Tower, but living in Terenure, the signal I pick up is not great. Waiting to get an external antenna!

I currently connect my UTD via USB, and the cable is around two metres in length. Not much room to move the UTD around to pick a better signal. I tried connecting via ethernet cable but I cannot connect at all to the NET. When I connect the UTD to the USB cable, WinXP picks up a Local Area Connection, but with the ethernet, it doesn't. Any ideas on how I can fix this?

Lastly, I must say this is an AWESOME forum! Great to see people with similar interests communicating and helping one another. So unlike other forums I've visited, things actually get done here. Well done! :)

Hi Valorian

Read the documentation that came with your driver disk.
You need to create a connection - in xp it is called "broadband connection that requires authentication"

Ethernet Connection

Hey Mayh3m,

Thanks for the reply. I've tried that when installing the UTD. Followed ALL the instructions in the docs, but nothing. I cannot quite remember the exact error message. Will check again this evening, and post the details.

Hmmm, I know this sounds like a silly question, but did you unplug the USB cable from the UTD before inserted the ethernet cable into the UTD?

You need to take a leap of faith. You need to lose the one to gain the other. Take out the USB, plug in the ethernet. Make sure your NIC is enabled! Create a new connection, broadband that requires a username and password... and you are done.

Hey Guys,

Thanks GateCrasher and IC. Will follow your advice. I had a sneaky suspicion that it could be the NIC. You've just added substance to my suspicion. Will let you know how it pans out.

iBurst_Terminal UTL

I noticed earlier on that since I've connected via ethernet, the iBurst_Terminal UTL app tells me no iBurst terminal is connected. I would like to get that running again, since it gives me details on signal strength and link speed. Is it possible to get it working together with the ethernet connection???

The answer is no. There is a thread that covers that - have a look in the Readme.1st thread for a link.

Actually, you can get it to "kind of" work. I do recall a few brief moments when I was connected via ethernet, but getting signal strength via the USB. I don't think I got connection speeds though. But it's completely impractical, because once the USB is connected to the PC, XP wants to use that as the default. So you have to keep enabling/disabling/installing/uninstalling etc. Just not worth it. Rather get a freeware meter. It a pity... with a bit of design work I'm sure they could have made the USB (control) and Ethernet (data) work in tandem.

Nowhere near as tech-sussed as you folks - but I have both ethernet and usb cables perm stuck into the back of my pc - and depending on which towers behaving I plug the appropriate cable into modem - short USB for Rosebank - and a 20 meter ethernet (reaching to other side of flat) for Northcliff.. Dont seem to have to install/uninstall anything in order for either to just work, the iburst software just keeps redialling till theres 'internet' it can connect via, when I switch between them..

man what the hell, whats up with all these new people connecting on my tower :(

I think we should seek them out one by one and terminate them ;)

agreed, i'll take the left bit, you take the right. But once they've all been erradicated... I'll have to take care of you :p
