Hi,

So I've recently gone out on my own and started my own company. At the moment, there are only 2 of us.

I operate from my home and have a 2 meg line with OpenWeb. Over the last 3 days, my connection keeps dropping every hour or so. This has become a very frustrating issue right now.

After submitting a ticket, the engineer advised me that I am loosing sync with the exchange so I have logged a fault with Telkom.

I have 3G as an emergency backup. it seems there are other options for me?

What I would like to know is, what are the alternatives to ADSL but uncapped? Or at least a 20 Gb cap. It doesn't need to be more than a 2 meg line. Are there good Neotel offerings or other service providers?

Budget is not more than R800 total since I pay R199 to the ISP and R350 or so to Telkom.

I pull 125GB per month with a 1Meg Afrihost business account for R397 (Line included) and I use the internet 24/7 so with your usage it will be perfect.

Post your ADSL line stats (found in your router)

It will look like this;

Try bitco residential offer.

neotel Wimax is 1k I think, you might look at their LTE offering Neobroadband LTE. Any specific issue with using 3g?

Rickster, here's the stats I could find on my router (not too good with networking so please bear with me):

maneshk , I'll have a look at bitco but I need something very basic.

PsyWulf, I don't have an issue with 3g, just too expensive for daily business usage...? How good is the service and offering from Neotel?

SNR is good but attenuation is not so good, i suggest you get a free 1GB afrihost account to rule out/confirm ISP issues.

Will give it a shot but pretty sure its Telkom since they got back to me saying that I am having issues. All the consultant said was that my profile was on a 4 meg and he's going to drop it down to 2. Apparently upgrading the line from 1 meg last year made it unstable. That's BS since it was already *** on 1 meg.

I'm having a look at BitCo. The wireless offering seems nice and for R699 per month, I can afford that. I assume you guys have had good service from them?

Hold onto the BitCo idea for a moment. There's clearly a problem between you and the exchange, since you are loosing sync.

Just hang on Telkom until they dispatch a tech. Also make sure that your end of the connection is solid, i.e. filter, modem, etc.

From my side I can say, that if Telkom has a good amount of interest in your area, they perform very well. Rather get wireless as a redundancy measure later on.

Thanks nand. I'll give it a shot. My end is pretty solid. I'm going to have to weigh all the options so I'll wait for the techie too.

What about telkom mobile 60 + 60 or 25 + 25 packages? no need for extra line rentals then

I think the BITCO option can be good if you get Data and Voice at the same time... Also will be "future Proof" as if you want to upgrade speeds, it will be quite easy and simple. Voice (Voip) is so far cheaper than Telkom and Cellular. The only thing is that you have to buy the VOIP devices, but from Scoop you can get some quite decent units very affordable.

Wireless connections have no issues with bad weather (unless you get hail of the size of Cricket Balls) and if you think power can be an issue, you can connect the unit (and your routers) to a medium size UPS and you will be good to go.

This way you will NEVER have to deal with Hellkom again.

I think bitco offers VoIP as well. They may even port your Telkom number.

So I tried BitCo but I don't fall within the coverage area so that is out. Telkom 25 + 25 is a good deal though I see that coverage also is bad here.

The only other option that I have is the Afrihost 10 + 10 for ~R500 a month. I already have the low end package so I could do this.

In any case, it looks like I am gona have to wait for a techie or move :wtf:
