Considering starting to pay (new) e-Tolls...

Hello everyone. I'd appreciate your thoughts and experiences. The eTroll matter is just taking so long to resolve, and there is no end in sight.

I do not pay and despite avoiding tolled freeways as much as possible, over the years the amount Sanrall claims I owe has mounted up.

I do not want to be faced with a mountain of debt to pay off in a couple of year's time if when this mess resolves through the courts it is decided that motorists must pay their outstanding debt, so I am considering paying new tolls going forward (but not charges previously Incurred).

My concern is that this will be seen as an admission on my side that I owe the past debt, putting me in a position where legally I have to settle the debt, or there are other consequences.

I am also wondering if anyone can advise if it is a problem to sell a car with outstanding e-Tolls?

Looking forward to a rational discussion.

Once you start paying for it, you're admitting to 'owing' the 'debt'. If you're prepared to pay something each month, to use the freeways - do as I and many others do - support OUTA with a monthly contribution and if the day ever arrives that SANRAL take you to court; OUTA will fight on your behalf.

As much as I strongly disagree with the concept, it's not going to just go away. And I'm not convinced that the courts will find against sanral. Everyone has an opinion, but it's just that... an opinion until what will be a very lengthy legal process has run its course. In the meantime I am angry with being put in this position. Maybe I am an idiot but this idiot is worried about how to potentially have to pay a growing debt. OUTA cannot guarantee they will win. The only consolation is that there are a few million people who have not paid, and there's safety in numbers.

@Tander this is what I am worried about, that once I start paying that I'm acknowledging that the debt is legal. I am a member of OUTA but they're not going to pay my debt for me if they fail :erm:

@messugga Glad to hear that you had no problem, planning on selling one of the cars soon.

Are you unable to just keep the money aside should you ever need to pay it?
 
@mister yeah, I have thought of that but that means losing the early payment discount thus increasing the total cost. To be frank, I regret not paying from the outset and just getting it over with.

Not because I agree with it, but just not to have yet another worry hanging over me. But at the time that was the decision I made, not expecting it to drag on so long. I don't think my reasons were faulty - one of the reasons I didn't pay in the beginning was that I felt the tariffs were excessive and extortionate, then they went and lowered them (proving they could still have made money charging much less in the beginning i.e. they *were* Profiteering). I also didn't have faith in their ability to bill correctly (lots of anecdotal evidence of that has come out) Then there's that fundamental issue that I don't feel that it's right to toll roads that are part of the normal infrastructure to get around the city you live in, doing your normal everyday business like getting to work to make a living. Just the normal sort of reasons that a lot of the non-payers have.

I'll probably have burning coals heaped on my head by quite a few commenters for my above admission that in hindsight I would have paid :) While I would love to be wrong, I'm just not convinced we're going to win this one.

Ah well, no need to make a decision tonight, and what's another 4 years of uncertainty lol

Put the eToll money in a 32 day account every month. If they do come after you one day, you have it. If they don't, you still have it.

I don't necessarily disagree with the concept of tolling the highways. It is a valid way to reduce congestion IF there are proper alternatives to using a car. But I'll be damned if I'm the only sucker paying.

Anyway, at one stage I owed something like R6k . Then after a while I only owed R300. And I definitely didn't pay.

Don't pay. Keep the money separately and wait for them to write the debt off. At the very least there should be another "last chance" discount.

What amount are we talking about here by the way? I wouldn't blame you too much for paying if it's in the R100 000s.
 
If you give up now you are making it more difficult for the rest of us who are still standing up against ANC corruption, therefore don't expect any sympathy from me over your decision if you decide to pay.

meh all debt prescribes after 3 years unless you acknowledge it, which you will when you sign up.
weird that you even considering this, and that you avoid highways, **** them, these highways have been paid for and the fact the government has decided to allocate the funds from the fuel levy to social grants instead of road maintenance as it is meant to be used, **** them and etolls.
Anyhow no issues selling a car, nobody gives jack **** about etolls, it is not even a consideration, etolls is a dead horse except for some idiots that have kept it barely going on minimal life support.
