Just wanted to get some opinions and advice, im new to linux, I dont know anything about Linux, but i'v always wanted to learn it and now im finally getting the courage to do so. My question is, is Ubuntu as good as everyone says it is? Is it a good distro for beginners? Like i said, i have no knowledge of linux, but will Ubuntu be easy for me to use and will it help me learn the Linux interface and commands? And does anyone know a good website with online tutorials on Linux from Basics to Advanced?

Yes, it is great for beginners. I also got started on Ubuntu, and that was a good couple of versions ago, when things were not that easy to do yet. Your best friend when trying out Ubuntu will be http://www.ubuntuforums.org. The commands are basically the same across all distros, so yes, it will help you. A heads up, the terminal might seem intimidating at first, but once you know your commands, you'll actually prefer doing things in there.

If you need help or get stuck, feel free to PM me, I'm always open to help people supporting OSS.

Thanks so much! gonna wait till they release the new version of Ubuntu and then i'll download it and give it a shot!

Yep, I can't wait for the new Kubuntu to come out either. Then I will upgrade from my current 8.04 installation.

Whats the difference between Ubuntu and Kubuntu and which one is better and why? Like I said, im still a n00b so I dont know these things :P

Kubuntu is a bit of nowhere movement. Gnome is a lot better, and its the default in Ubuntu. But either way, try Ubuntu and remember there are a lot of nice tutorials online. You might want to download ubuwiki.sourceforge.net, which is an offline wiki-on-a-stick I created to help new-users. It has all the FAQs and links to cools Ubuntu sites.

Well Ubuntu uses the Gnome desktop, while Kubuntu uses KDE. Each desktop environment comes with their own set of apps, themes and style. They both still have the same Ubuntu core. Well its a matter of preference really, personally I prefer Kubuntu over Ubuntu, for me it is just easier and structured better. You'll have to try it out for yourself and see what you prefer. KDE can be installed in Ubuntu, and vice versa, so you can have more than one DE running on your system.

ah i see, well in that case I'll just download Ubuntu and then install the KDE if i dont like the gnome, I prefer downloading cuz I dont like to wait :) i'd rather have it in 1 day then wait for it to be delivered to me :) I downloaded Backtrack a few days ago (was reffered to me by my hacker fanatic friend) but I struggled with it, couldnt get the internet to work

Don't try KDE unless you want everything to be like Kbootable and Kdesktop in your Komputer while using Konquorer to get Kaffiene and like if its filed under K then its organised. See what I mean ;-)

Yep, Backtrack does take some time to setup, my 1 buddy is also using it. I'm going to start playing around with it soon.

Yeah thats why I wanna get ubuntu, apparently its a lot easier for noobs like me, so i wanna learn Linux through ubuntu and then apply my knowledge to backtrack. When is the new Ubuntu released? isnt it like 2 more days till its released or something?

Oh yes, there is also a local repository for Ubuntu, so you can install your software and do your updates with local bandwidth, although some updates do require an international connection.

Oh? so where can I download it locally? I do have a Local only account, so I can make use of that :P
