Hi people,

I have been getting consistent errors whenever I try to connect through a PPPoE connection in Windows (XP/Vista and 7). All give the same error. I have searched the Internetz with no resolve.

Any help would be appreciated!

Both the 678, 721 Errors are because you are not able to make a connection with the server. This is caused by two things, either the server is OFF or your connection is not setup correctly to talk to the server.

Check that your filewall is not blocking the connection and that is its correctly setup.

Thanks for the response.

I have tried to resolve the issue by checking firewalls etc but the problem seems to ease up sometimes. It works about 1 in 10 times but fails soon after, within a few hours and then I am unable to reconnect the PPPoE connection.

This problem exists with both my Linksys WAG54G2 and D-Link 2640U routers.

Is there anything specific I need to do to the firewall?

The Pc you are connecting from is not by any chance an HP with Windows SP2 is it ?

The firewall was already turned off on my XP machine. I tried dialing again from my main Windows 7 machine and it connected once, I disconnected it and it would not connect after that.

The router manages to make a connection though. Its just the PPPoE connections initiated from computers that don't work.

My setup is as follows:

Linksys WAG54G2 DSL Modem
Windows 7 machine with DHCP assigned address
Windows XP machine with static IP address configured to not allow the machine to use the gateway as an Internet source (No gateway address entered). This is to ensure local bandwidth is used on the xp machine.

Thanks for the help so far!

Is your router set in bridge mode? If not, check if it doesn't have a PPPoE Passthrough or PPPoE Relay option that you can enable. If it doesn't have those 2 options, then you have to put your router in bridge mode for you to be able to dial a connection from your PC.

The D-Link 2640U does support PPPoE passthrough, but you would have to add a separate bridge WAN interface with VCI/VPI set to 8/35 if you already have a PPPoE WAN interface.

I did what you recommended with the D-Link. It appears the Linksys WAG54G2 does not have an area for configuring PPPoE passthrough.

It looks to be working. Thanks for all your assistance. I will report back if there are any issues, otherwise, consider the problem rectified.

The Linksys WAG54G2 is supposed to have VPN Passthrough support, and PPPoE passthrough falls under that.

678 is the XP equivalent , to 721 vista and win 7

basically it means communication errors of which either port problem at exchange or modem faulty or even very rarly tho both modem and exchange faulty
if u checked setting vpi 8 vci 35 encapsulation PPPoE and even plugged in a other modem then the likelihood is that the exchange port is faulty call telkom log fault error 678
