Console for my kids?

So I play intermittently on a PS4, and I have noticed that my 2 girls (9 and 6) are becoming really interested in some of the games, and want to play as well. The problem is I have some kids games, but not many. I would like to get them a console for them too (I don't promote excessive time on the TV) but for those days its ok to sit and game for a bit. Deciding between either another PS4 - with the idea, that if they do enjoy it, we can game online together, or have the same interests, alternatively something new like a switch or an Xbox. Then they have options of exclusives, and especially the Switch with things like Zelda and Mario, However I am not sure they will be into that Genre, which is a costly risk. So question is really, does anyone have a switch? and is it kid friendly in terms of control handling etc?

Get them a ps3, you will save on psn fees and have free games on both consoles.

Switch is the best kids console, by far, the main benefit being it's a portable so you can take it with you to keep them occupied wherever you go. Yesterday we went to the gym and my two older boys sat in the food area playing Minecraft together on the Switch.

That, plus Nintendo games have always been more oriented towards kids - like Yoshi, Mario, Kirby, Mario Kart, and smaller games like Snipperclips, Splatoon 2, Sonic Mania, etc. Not to mention Labo is coming soon with the whole cardboard crafting thing. It isn't even a question, IMO.

I'm very happy with my Switch.
I've had it since just after it launched and so far player Mario Kart, Super Mario Oddesey, Legend of Zelda and Snipper Clips on it.

I don't see why your kids would have any issue using the controllers. It only took me a couple of hours to get used to the joycon controllers.
As long as Nintendo keeps brining out party games like on the Wii and Wii-U, then they should also love those titles as its awesome to play with your friends and family.

My kids: daughter 7yrs; son 10yrs.

Devices:
* Switch
* Tablet
* XBox One
* Win10 Laptop
* PS3

Switch is great but still too few titles and expensive. The device that gets used the least in the house by my kids. The portability is a selling point but unlike Cerebus, I don't encourage my kids to be playing on devices around food ;) ... I don't even allow devices in their bedrooms.

The tablet gets used the most by my daughter, just a cheap Vodacom 7" one.

My son prefers the XBox One now and my daughter will never say no to a game of Minecraft or Roblox with him. The Games With Gold is a big win along with EA Access subscriptions.

He will often still play on his touch screen atom based laptop.

PS3 never gets used, just gave away 90% of the games to a neighbour.

Give them the PS4 and get a new console for yourself

I need to find some Xbox One games that aren't the lego ones for my 6 year old to play, he also wants them to be co-op. I've resorted to try out Army of two, but it's hard to control for him.

Nice, my 7 year old daughter plays CoD and she is pretty good.She also plays minecraft, but im going to get her into proper map making in the form of Unreal Engine4.

He'll have to buy 2 of them, very little chance of them sharing it, if the OP can afford 2 Switches then it's the best choice by far. Xbox One has Game Pass I think it's R150 a month so there'll no need to buy games not sure how many age appropriate games are available though, added bonus is Xbox One Exclusives will be available with this service.

This to me seems like the perfect excuse for the OP to upgrade to a PS4 pro and give them his PS4

I don't understand what you mean. What does sharing have to do with it? I only have 1 Switch in the family.

Nintendo Switch without question.

But Xbox One + Game Pass is also a very compelling offer but then the games would need to qualify for the purpose.

I think even the handful of games on Switch are enough to keep kids occupied.

https://www.xbox.com/en-ZA/games/xbox-game-pass

But it's a R150 a month perpetually.

Which probably makes the Switch cheaper within a year. And it has the benefit of going with you on holidays etc.

When the **** did this entitlement fall out of a tree?

Did you grow up with every kid having a console of their own?

I certainly didn't. The Nintendo Entertainment System clone was shared by all as was the PC down the line until I could buy my own.

It shares major design elements of a personal mobile device (phones and tablets) there's always a risk of somebody hogging the device but then again the OP would know if his kids are able to share

Always a risk of one them taking the console to the room and hogging it.

But they need to sort it out. I give them alternating days and most of the time they play multiplayer games anyway like Minecraft or MK8

That's its one saving grace that it is actually multiuser unlike the retarded PS Vita and Apple TV in my house.
