What features would you like to see in a future console ?

I have a XBox360, what I'd like to see is:
A) A headphone socket.
B) Two video outs - Many games have split screen multiplayer, but it would be great to connect two displays to one console instead of split screen (even if it's at SD res).

Too much processing. I doubt any GPU could handle that. Maybe something similar to SLi could be added to enable that option?

Do you really think two display SD will take that much more processing than split screen HD ?

At around R600 a game, you cannot really justify the cost of two consoles and two copies for the odd multiplayer game.

Anyway, seeing as this is a wishlist. It would be awesome.

Thats some pretty cool ideas, especially the two screen support.
Then even Civ Revolution could perhaps be played in 2 player mode using one console ;) Just move the screens so your opponent cant sneak a peek :p

Yes, I honestly do. Processing would put excessive strain on the GPU. Single screen split output is processing a single picture for a single screen, regardless of HD, this processes a single. Dual screen SD requires processing each output individually.

I would like to see a keyboard and mouse... Oh... wait, I can just buy a PC.

Pc fanboi alert. . . some people don't have R10 000 to spend on a pc equal to a gaming system

I think you make a good point. Dual screens would require a lot of processing, yes I understand this is a wishlist, and as such the price would become prohibitive. So please don't compare consoles to PCs; consoles are a lot cheaper with a specific objective in mind, as a result (which makes them cheaper).

Intitially the ps3 was supposed to have 2 hdmi ports (the concept one showed at e3 2005 had it) but sony was a bit too ambitious :D since it never came to fruition

My knowledge of consoles is very minimal so apologies if some of this exists already, but:

  1. Lossless, wireless HD and 7.1 audio signal streaming - and plug and play ease of use.
  2. Dual boot to alternative OS and use as a PC
  3. Built-in Decoder and PVR functionality with the ability to download the software from your preferred vendor's website i.e. download DSTV software and receive the signal via cable, not satellite.
  4. Make them smaller (not functionality, but would be nice)
  5. 2 X 1TB HDDs
  6. Multiple HD outputs for up to 4 LCDS and games that support this - so you can get a full view of the environment and immerse yourself in it (if you can afford it that is :o )
  7. 3D or holographic output - OK, so a pipe dream for now, but it would be pretty sweet.
  8. Massive networking - OK, let me explain - if bandwidth and electricity werent issues, then surely one could harness the power of other consoles that were not being used within the network, and therefore make some hardcore games that require processing power that we cant yet produce? Bandwidth would increase though as would electricity bills. Just a thought.
  9. User defined settings that loads everything from OS to games to content filters to applications etc.
  10. Because it is also a PC, it could control your home automation too with software that runs in the background, linked to a hardware panel inside the house. Control my CCTV, my curtains, security, heating, lights, home sound system, kettle, fridge etc. (With a backup of course)
  11. Wireless 1TB/s backup
  12. Plug and play portability so I can unplug it and take the box wherever I choose. Obviously hard-wired functionality wont work and that is understandable, but the core gaming system and computer should work easily.
  13. No keyboard, no mouse, no bulky wireless controller. I dont know how, but they can figure that one out themselves. My PS3 controllers have been chewed to bits by the dogs (my bad).
  14. Linked to intelligent appliances so I can view my fridge stock, kettle volume, dust mite content of the air, total electricity usage etc.
  15. Link to vendors and my bank using an easy interface so I can view and pay al my bills on a consolidated platform that doubles as my intelligent financial controller.
  16. Link directly to my brokers and data providers so I can trade equities from my armchair.

I can go on.

I'm easy to please - basically I want everything!!!

There's just no pleasing some people !:D

Of course price competitiveness is hugely important for a console. As such, they can make a second GPU available as an optional plug-in unit (like the harddisk add-on or a special expansion bay).

I like DJK's idea of making it portable. Perhaps a docking station like the ones you get for a laptop. If you want to take it with you, you don't need to unplug everything.

And BTW, DJK, home automation control is possible from the XBox.
