Hi all,

I've been experiencing a lot of DNS issues when browsing and don't know why or how to fix. Some sites works perfectly other fail. This happens on and off where I can browse to cnn.com and the next moment I can't.

See trace route example of 3 different sites, because at first I thought it was only international sites.

C:\>tracert www.myadsl.co.za
Tracing route to www.myadsl.co.za [196.7.147.165] over a maximum of 30 hops:
1 1 ms <10 ms <10 ms 192.168.1.254

C:\>tracert torrentfreak.com
Unable to resolve target system name torrentfreak.com.

C:\>tracert cnn.com
Tracing route to cnn.com [64.236.24.12] over a maximum of 30 hops:
1 <10 ms <10 ms <10 ms

My gear: Telkom Ethernet ADSL Router connected to GIGABYTE GN-B49G Wireless Router. Browsing is from my laptop running Windows XP Pro SP2 wifi connected or from one of my servers UTP connected into my Wireless Router.

Telkomsa.net is my ISP. mmhhh what more can I say except for that it REALLY getting to me.

Hope anybody can help.

I have found using the proxy: cache.saix.net:8080 solves the issues.

Thanks

Thanks a lot, it seems to be helping. I'll keep this forum posted.

If you've got ADSL, you should use the DSL cache
dsl-cache.saix.net 8080

you can also try specifying your DNS servers in the router:

196.43.1.11
196.25.1.11

Those are both SAIX name servers... I hate using proxies!

I don't like proxies either but even with those DNS servers in my router I still get DNS errors.

Okay, it's happening a lot less when I use dsl-cache.saix.net:8080 but I just got a DNS error when trying to connect to this site.

Thanks guys for all the help.

Interestingly, I needed to update a website last night and got problems connecting (saying the website does not exist) with Frontpage and normal FTP - I then changed the DNS to 196.25.1.1 and 196.25.1.9 and it worked - previously had 196.43.1.1 & 196.25.1.11.

@bekdik & AjqNic - thanks for the infos - have implemented the changes in the site mentioned - working nice now (seems to be quicker finding the sites too, maybe I'm imagining it...)
