Hi, I was hoping I can maybe get some information from a person who has had the same problem before since about Wednesday last week my modem almost constantly disconnects. It is not the ISP that drops the Link but the actual link to the DSLAM that goes down, mostly it comes back up within a few seconds but just enough to make IM, online games, etc disconnect. I have a Netgear modem and it has some nice statistics about line attenuation and Noise Margins. I can’t remember the line attenuation value but the noise margin sometimes is 2.4dB, I believe this is not good. So what I want 2 know is if somebody else has a Netgear modem, what is those values on your modem, it is under router status->show statistics. Secondly for someone who maybe has had this problem before, is it on my side or is this a Telkom problem

I have a marconi router and since about the same time i've been having disconnects also.

I've tried a couple of things to see if i can narrow down the fault.
1: change hardware.(try different switches/cables)
2: run constant pings ( to pinpoint the exact time that the disconnects happen and then also to see if it's a regular time out)

Honestly i don't have a clue how attenuation affects my line.
If someone can please explain then i could provide a bit more info.

Where bouts u francoistk? i'm in cpt bellville.

jeeeez i've been having the exact same problem since wednesday:(

havnt a clue what it is... but its annoying nonetheless

Pretoria, And well I am pretty sure it's somewhere between my router and the exchange equipment. And it is definatly line noise, I got hold of some stats from another company that is in the same building as my office, and they don't seem to have that problem. their line attenuation is something like 15dB and the noise margin is 32dB which sounds to me more correct.

I had the same problem and had a techie to sort it out. The problem was that the ppl who did the installation did not connect the line properly. After fixing the line, the problem came back a week later. Looks like Telkom ppl do not know how to wire. Looks like i'll ask them to rewire the whole line.

Also: the first thing telkom does is blame the line drops on ur modem. This is seldomly the case so don't take crap from them.

Yeah i bet also it is some wiring problem and since I've had the line for almost a year now I bet it was some guy sitting on the corner of the street looking for a free line and moved mine to a more worse line. Still waiting for the techie to phone me after I reported the error.

i have also been having disconnecting problems since last week and from last night i dont have adsl at all....WTF????

Yep did that on friday I am stil waiting for them. Some lady from a company that does market research phoned me though and asked me if I was happy with the service I got from telkom.

Thanks doc_msk, and that is exactly as I suspected what the problem is. Hope they can fix mine as easily as yours, when they find the techie that is suppose 2 do this.

You are welcome.

I was actually impressed at the speed at which TelCon called me, and resolved the problem. I even had follow up calls to check if everything was OK.

Regards
Doc

Yeah sometimes they seem to respond fast, last time I complained it was a sunday evening at 8pm before 10pm the engineer phoned me back and said they will fix the problem, monday morning it was done. This time its 4 days and counting.
