Hi there everyone, I'm using telkom 512k line, with telkom internet as my ISP. I am getting constantly disconnected, like every 5 to 10 min, and the only way to reconnect is to go to my telephone jack on the wall and take the phone cable and plug it in and out 5 - 8 times. Whats really strange is that if it try the same process but disconnect the line at my modem, it doesn't work. Does anyone out there have any clue wat is going on and how I can fix it.

Much appreciated guys.

Could be your Telkom line giving troubles. If your SNR is low and cannot keep the ADSL line up. It will drop every 5-10 minutes

log onto your router and have a look at your Line sync speed, and what SNR u get *usually rated in dB*

im using a netgear dg834g routerm and im looking through all the options but im struggling to find the line sync speed, or SNR, any ideas where I'd find these?

ok i have a line attenuation, downstream of 42db and upstream of 13db. noise levels are 13 and 12.

select router status on the left and when that loads click on statistics at the bottom ... there are two buttons, it should be one of them. post the stats here and we'll know if it is a snr problem.

you beat me to it. you have a high noise on the line (i think). the 13 and 12 are causing the problem. your line is operating just 13 db above where it should be. do you have any other instruments on the line?? if so remove these and see the stats.

nope absolutely nothing else on hey. I'm not running a phone or anything on it. Telkom, go figure.

Actually i just disconnected the downstairs phone, which is on a different jack, and the noise has changed to 6 and 12. Intersting....

when you say it was on a different jack ... you mean the phone is on another line or sharing the line but on a different jack? if it is on the same line, i'd say you need to check your wiring, especially at the junction where the line splits. do you have a filter on all phones / instruments?

Its the same line, different jacks. As far as I know I have no filters on any of the lines. What is annoying is that when we were still using 56k dialup, we had poor line quality that telkom had to come fix, but evidently they just did a half-a$$ed job. Guess I shouldn't be shocked by this should I.

filters are important on the phone instruments. its a pots filter available at any telkom outlet - R 39. without the filter, everytime you use the phone (incoming or outgoing calls), you will drop your adsl connection and that is probably what was happening. make sure to get those filters in on every phone. note that the connection to the modem is "unfiltered".

MMMmmmmm that would make a lot of sense since my ADSL does get disconnected every time someone calls. Thanks JayN, will give it a go, much appreciated.

Good catch on the pots filter.....let us know if it worked!? Otherwise it should be the line...can't imagine anything else..
