Do anyone have info about the new CPA in April and how it would affect contract pricing? Surely it must...no free phones!

CPA states even with a contract one can get out......at 10% of remaining costs

Thats of the contract, you would still need to cover the cost of the phone.

For example. If I where to cancel my curent Autopage contact 7 months early it would cost me R4500, R500 more than I would pay if the contract ran its course.
IF the cpa where in force, I would pay R400 + about R1000 for the phone.

So when can one actually start cancelling a contract, because you have to give a months notice, do i have to wait for the end of the month, when the act kicks in, and then give notice. And the thing about the "free" phones, when you sign the contract it's advertised as free phone, so when i cancel i have to pay for what was originally advertised as free?

You'll probably find under the new act it wont be advertised as free.

You'll get a subsidised handset which is subject to the completion of the contract, or a pay-in of x amount.

And it terms of existing contracts where the phone was initially advertised as free?

My contract come to an end on the 16th of march som i'm waiting for the CPA to come in but, i really don't see it making a difference. They will find a way to make it useless to consumers. Maybe they'll value some phones at R50k and then 10% would still cover the costs :)

I think the CPA will help us like the lower interconnect rate have...

Thanks xrapidx. This then makes sense on how they will treat the handset part of the deal. We could live with that. I currently have 4 months to go on my contract @R450/pm. In that amount is R80 for handset. So I agreed to pay them R80 X4 = R320 and cancel the contract. They wont allow it (They want R450*4 = R1800) . So in the new act I could have paid R320 for the phone plus a max of 10% of the remainder which would be (R450-R80= R370*4 =R1480 *10%) R148. Total R468 to get out! Correct???

Thats hopefully how it will work... device would be separate from 'network' contract.

What about when you upgrade? Will the CPA cover it then?

This response is noted on another thread regarding the new Consumer Act:
"The CPA could apply to any contract entered into on or after 25 April 2010 AND that will expire after 24 October 2012.

However the consumer only has the right to bring action after the effective implementation date of the rest of the CPA (1 April 2011).

This is if the action is not excluded due to certain other restrictions (there are NOT many exceptions!!)."

Sorry I meant...
CPA doesn't cover existing contracts.
