Hi all

Anyone here an expert in Android and how to set them up? How does one simply (without 3rd party apps etc.) sync contacts from an Android phone to Google so that it is available to other devices for syncing?

I am sure this should be possible but according to some people it isn't.

Thanks!

on your android phone make sure your contacts are set to store on Google (and not phone), and if you check under contact settings (or manage contacts) you can copy contacts from phone to Google

the very premise of android devices is their link up with google

Actually what if you don't use Google, how do you back up your contacts and sync them to other devices?

Works the same. Instead of a Google account I use a Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync account. Keeps contacts, calendar, tasks, etc... In sync just as my GApps account used to (moved to outlook.com).
Works across all devices, PCs and notebooks.

And what if I don't have an ActiveSync account? Why can't I just back my contacts up locally?

What is your actual goal here?

1. How to backup to Google and sync with other devices.
2. How to backup elsewhere and sync with other devices.
3. How to backup locally.

And this is on all Android devices? Definitely possible?

prety much the basic premise of an android device is to be in complete sync with your google account -can sync with others but since same company it tensds to push you that way :)

Locally as in you PC or phone?

Maybe a little back round on what you want to do exactly ?

@MyWorld Your post is very narrow minded; just because you like Gmail does not mean other people want to use it. But just because someone doesn't want to use Gmail doesn't mean they don't want a specific type of phone, in this case something with Android on it. They are not mutually inclusive you know.

But thanks for the links, we will use them.

@Mike Smit All 3 of the above - it is a general question for getting contacts off various Android devices in cases where 1. the person has Gmail anyway but not necessarily set up correctly on Android, 2. the person has another service or 3. the person has no cloud service (which they really have every right not to do).

@isie I think that answers it but there is no background for a specific problem, rather that we were trying to set up a general solution. Locally as a computer, or even a memory card or something, as long as it's readable.

Thanks to all who answered - I didn't know Android was a Google thing so that helps.

With Android devices you can back up contacts to the memory card as well as google account- just need to check under settings of the contacts (they might be something different depending on phone like mines is manage contacts) , to a computer I think you can not 100% sure if this is with all of them but you would probably just need to get the devices Pc software (Samsung Kies HTC sync etc)

Well, you can either use Gmail,Activesync or a 3rd party app

or

Do it the hard way
