Thats the gmail sync app, you need to setup server side contact syncing with gmail then it works fine, but the actual google sync app that you download duplicates any contacts.
I setup my gmail on mobileemail site and let gmail sync my contacts and calendar and there were no duplicates at all and any changes made on either side automatically sync with the next mail check.
Just take not that setting it up like this will disable cable sync for contacts and calendar with outlook/outlook express etc.
Also go to your setting, not sure where it is because on my 9520 it was defaulted, but when i tried syncing with that app it alerted me that it cannot work as my settings do not allow duplicate contacts, so you can set it to not allow duplicate contacts in setting somewhere, this will also prevent this app from functioning.
Its up to you how to go about it, if you have a premium business acc with gmail you can have your phone sync wireless with gmail and then gmail sync down to outlook but that plugin does not work with the standard business or free gmail accounts.
Thanks for the detailed answer.
I'll go and have a look. Couple of noteworthy points for me to follow up - I am not using any app to sync - but will look at my seetings on server side. Also weird is that my phone is already setup not to accept duplicate names, but I now have my contacts in triplicate already. No issues at all on the calendar side.
Thanks
I have seen that problem before, but it was caused by outlook as outlook will accept duplicate names it just files them with different names therefore syncing them to the handset in duplicates and triplicates without the handset complaining. Normally happened when i had to format or upgrade outlook or even the handset software as it looses the record of already synced items and resyncs them without the phone complaining. What i did in that event was up until i learnt that it always happens i would sort out the contacts in outlook and do a replace sync through the software which then removes all entries on the phone replacing them with that in outlook.
Also check with gmail and see if the contacts are duplicated there.
