looking for either a decent "light" cms or a cms that is in your opinion the better of the pack. please give reason too why you would think so.

thanks.

Necuno,

I've been using quite a variety of CMS' but the best is Joomla not very light by very very good and Reason = Support....

I dont know about the best, because iv only tried drupal- but im really happy with it- out the box its a little lacking, but once you have included a few select modules, its a real powerhouse.
I also went from no web experience to a full site in 2 days- so its quick to learn.

Jip, drupal is very nice. If you want to really learn it, then a good book on Drupal might be a good idea. I have one that covers everything from templates to modules.

which book do you recommend- im sure iv only scraped the surface of what can be done.

@Necuno - when you say 'light', what exactly do you mean? Light as in easy on the server, or light as in easy to setup/maintain, or light as in user-friendly?

i wish the notation of "find out about cms" was more specific :D. i guess light as in not bloat with features but a good set of "core things" to get the cms job done.

The list in my first post also have a section with "light" CMS's.

I've used a few different CMSs and recommend them in the following order:

Drupal
Wordpress
Give up on having a site
Typo3
Daylight
Hack off own limbs with a spoon
Daylight
Joomla

WordPress or SilverStripe.

Of course, I could ask the question, what are core features, but I won't go there. ;)

Why? WordPress is well known, has good support, and isn't bloated unless you make it so. SilverStripe - well, try it and see. It's quick to get up and going, has excellent documentation, and while it is light, it is core complete and extensible.

Wordpress 3 has custom content types now, making it more "CMSy".

I prefer Joomla. It's got good support. Lot's of great extentions and plenty of theme's. Both free and payware.

Wordpress is pretty good for a blog type site though.

Take a look at easyCMSlite

Its a product I'm developing and its free. It is very lite and simple, perfect for simple websites. Mostly on page editing, ie, you don't need to go to another screen to add menus as you do with Joomla, you do it all on page.

Its version 1, so I know its going to go through many revisions / releases. Anyone wanting to try it out is free to do so, and I'd appreciate feedback which is constructive (I've seen how people needlessly flame one another, not pretty)..

Take a look, there is also a dedicated demo server available for you to try it out on.

I would say Joomla takes the cake with this one. It's being supported by many developers and there are thousands of extensions & themes to download for it. Developing new extensions is also fairly easy. Most hosting companies will support it on their servers so it makes portability much easier.
