Content management system - recommendations ?

I would say Joomla takes the cake with this one. It's being supported by many developers and there are thousands of extensions & themes to download for it. Developing new extensions is also fairly easy. Most hosting companies will support it on their servers so it makes portability much easier.

Couldn't disagree more. Joomla is the ****test CMS there is.

FFS, you upload some files, create a DB and that's it. There's no "support" required.

As a beginner, I would agree - however, once you get into the nitty-gritty (i.e. want to go off the beaten path) it becomes ponderous. Plus many of the modules available still use tables for layout (yeah, it kills me too), and force their idea of layouts down your throat.

Drupal takes longer to get into, but is better for a developer. I still maintain that SilverStripe is an up-and-coming CMS that caters to developers and designers alike. Watch this space.

Raithlin,

I'm still searching for a viable CMS/forum combo. Been playing around with Django. Really like Python's "syntactical" aesthetics . Django is not a CMS, but it's admin automisation is sweet. There is a nice Python forum similar to phpBB/SMF too.

Silverstripe has a forum module, and Drupal too - as does Joomla. Take your pick. ;)

Best thing I heard about Django was their documentation. Sweet documentation...

[EDIT} Have you tried http://www.glfusion.org/ ?

I haven't heard of glfusion, thanks.

Drupal and Joomla's forum modules are a disgrace. Best bet at the moment is a bridge from Drupal to phpBB. I will never use Joomla again.

Drupal is by far the best. Have a look at the Drupal Video Repository, as there are alot of sites that have Drupal video tutorials. GotDrupal is a great resource for that. I am a person that hates reading books and this covers alot of the basic stuff. If you have some money to burn, then the Drupal video series from Lullabot, covers almost everything you need to know.

I agree with you on the Drupal forum modules

Really? Can you upload *any* script any *any* web server and it will work, every time? Take a look at just about every web based program (i.e. CMS, blog, forum, shopping cart, etc) and you'll see they all have a lot of requirements. Some have some unique requirements which many hosts don't offer out of the the box, which could be a show stopper for many people, especially when the host has limited server access (i.e. usually only FTP access, no control panel) and wouldn't bother loading extra PHP (or ASP if you go that route) extensions for you.

I have used most systems, and for a long time, and I have only the following to say.

If you are blogging, WordPress.

If you want to extend past blogging, and have social networking and etc, Joomla.

Joomla FTW.

If you'll excuse me quoting my own post... we still haven't heard from Necuno.

lool. i'll still have to properly look at them, but i kept on being swept under so much work i seem to always need to push this back :(
