I need to renew/cancel my contract by the 4th of December. I'm looking for advice on what to do.

I'm currently on a MTN contract which gives me R200 airtime value which I can spend on anything (voice/data/sms) per month.

I don't need a phone at all, I will be keeping my current phone, but I understand sometimes it's better to get a cheapie phone with a contract as the rate is better.

I mainly use the data on my phone as I communicate with whatsapp/email and I do call people sometimes, but not frequently. I hardly ever sms.

The contract HAS to be one that is set i.e. a topup one that I can't spend over the allowance given; this gives me peace of mind.

Should I stay with MTN's airtime value or go to prepaid on a provider? Any suggestions will be much appreciated.

In a similar situation. Still deciding whether I want a new phone or not.

I'm mostly eyeballing Telkom Mobile right now. Since its backed by MTN the coverage should be OK & their value seems decent too.

Their offerings seem so expensive for little though...

Yeah, it looks like the deals aren't even good without a phone... But who to go prepaid with?

Good Q,i hate MTN so wouldnt mind giving them the boot, let me do some research and il get back to you.

Looks like Telkom Mobile is the clear winner.

Now to port my number from mtn contract to prepaid.

Can you buy data bundles with airtime on Telkom Mobile?
Im pretty sure you can buy prepaid data bundles.

Yes, buy airtime, then dial *180# to buy a data bundle with that airtime.

Pooky google the recent R49 offering from TM...some bloke here had a way to combine that with simsonke. The exact nature of this simsonke thing eludes me...but the combination seemed like a superior option to a clean prepaid sim. Not sure whether on can port the phone num but might be worth your while investigating.

I looked at that R49 thing, but the OOB rate is R1 per MB.... Wouldn't it be better to just go for the sim-sonke: http://www.telkommobile.co.za/plans/prepaid-voice/ @ 29c per mb.

its hard capped to 200mb per month so i don't see how there can be oob...

EDIT scratch that...thats assuming you don't load cash on it.

not sure how it interacts with simsonke though. one would hope the lower rate prevails. Someone had a scheme where you've got both r49 and simsonke running in parallel.

ja someone here...check the recent r49 threads/my posts

as i said might be tricky on the preserving your number front though

I think I found it, it mentions doing a sim-swap between that deal and sim sonke.

Does anyone happen to know the procedure to port from MTN contract to prepaid Telkom?

Vodacom has some good rates on No Phone contracts. And signal is excellent (LTE Coverage is great too!)
