Contract upgrade question

So my cellphone contract is eligible for an upgrade and I still have 3 months on the contract. If I upgrade, will I pay for the new device and old one simultaneously or will I finish off the old contract first and then start paying for the new device?

First contract was 24 months.
You can upgrade from 21st month but will still continue to pay up the existing contract until 24th month and then the new device and package will be the one to pay for the next 24 months.

My advice for now is that if you are due an upgrade from now, wait out until Black Friday, will probably be worth it.

I know prepaid is has more benefits but I usually look at the price difference between monthly payment x 24 VS cash price. If the difference is not that great, I usually go contract.

I had totally forgotten about Black Friday. I might even buy prepaid if the prices are good on Amazon/gearbest/takealot/connected devices.
