I was miffed with Cell Cs' new data bundle packages but decided to do an analysis for a typical "smartphone" type package and see if it was worth porting over for the savings. Wow was I surprised.
Smartphones use Data,Voice and SMS so I looked at all-encompassing options and came up with this:
"Basic" Smartphone package(about 120 anytime minutes, 100 sms's and 100MB data):
Vodacom:
R315 Talk 130 package( 130 minutes)
R33 100 SMS Bundle
R88 110MB Data
Total cost: R436:wtf:
Cell C:
R200 Control Chat 200 (R235 airtime plus 100 free sms's. Phone calls R1.5 per min)
use R50 of the airtime and you get 100MB data. This leaves airtime for 123 minutes.
Total cost: R200
So at Cell C you get for R200 what you would pay R436 with Vodacom. Lets take a look at a bigger package for heavier users.
"Advanced" Smartphone Package (About 240 minutes,300 sms's and 500MB Data):
Vodacom:
R430 Talk 240 package( 240 minutes)
R67.5 300 SMS Bundle
R189 600MB Data Bundle
Total cost: R686.5
Cell C:
R500 Control Chat 500 (R600 airtime plus 100 free sms's. Phone calls R1.5 per min)
use R150 of the airtime and you get 500MB data. This leaves R450 now use 200 sms's at 50c per sms. This leaves R350 enough for 233 minutes of calling
Total cost: R500
Hands down CellC wins in these situations, and the nice this is that if you use less sms's you can make more calls. I didn't compare Vodacom topup packages as they are so bad in this comparison it's almost embarrasing. For example their per minute rate is R1.60 Voda to Voda while CellC is R1.50 to anywhere. I know my analysis didn't include MTN but their pricing is so similar it's actually shameful. It seems the 100 free sms's and the free airtime allocation is what really pushes CellC into the win situation here.
Is my analysis flawed in anyway or should I get porting the moment my Vodacom contract is up?
