The easiest way is to just find a friend with those all-in-one hifis with a tape deck and usb input. Most of them have direct usb recording from tape.

Record one side of the tape as one big track, it makes post processing easier then just cut it up into tracks. An extra advantage is, no volume issues as gain is internally set.

Yeah I remember those mini hi-fi things. Can't say how many I've given away as newer ones became available

Good idea to do the hard work afterwards on the PC instead of fiddling as I go along.

Yes I read his post now. When I did my tapes back in the 90's there weren't many choices.

@maumau, I am not in the businesss, but have always been an audio enthusiast since I was young.

You must go and look on ebay what blank cassettes sell for these days, then you will understand why I am advising against throwing them away. The guy that I bought my tape deck from gave me a set of 5 Sony cassettes that were still in their original packaging. I could not believe my luck! Needless to say, I am keeping them sealed.

I recently did about 60 tapes of lectures using a cheap USB tape to mp3 player. It was incredibly time-consuming, and then I spent forever editing the recordings to clean up the speech. It was not fun at all...

I'm surprised you are not hearing anything from the professionals, they usually make easy work of things like this.

I have a cheapish vinyl player which has usb connection to the PC and a bit of software to convert the vinyl to digital but I have a better experience just using the line input on and Audacity on the PC, quality is not the best thing in the world as the Lp's aren't in the best condition but there are a few addon's and filters you can use to help with the crackle and pops.

Interesting, I'd guess the water is adding a dampening effect to the needle, lessening the violent jumps that occur. Good Idea, but not with electricity.

I lecture on maths / advanced cadcam & cnc manufacturing techniques. the national exams were for my students. I just had to moderate & mark the papers.
