I am nearing the end of my two year contract with MTN SP (finally!!!) and really want to get away from all MTN contracts because of all their billing issues etc.

I know it is possible to port my number to MTN pre-paid, but after visiting my local MTN Service centre (Cherrylane, Brooklyn PTA) they said: "we don't do that". I insisted that it must be possible..."no, we can not"

WTF!? Now if I want to retain my current number and not continue with a contract I have to port to Vodacom (or other). When I asked them if they dont want my business, they replied: "it is not like that"

<sigh> Does anyone know how to go about taking a contract number to pre-paid without changing provider??

My guess is that you can just cancel the contract at the end of it's duration. Remember to cancel the contract otherwise you will automatically roll over on a month to month basis with your existing contract terms. Once you've cancelled simply by a recharge voucher and "claim" the number. Probably a bit risky, but should work.

Alternatively by a MTN starter pack and SMS all your friends the new number :)

Vodacom SP allows a contract number to be changed to prepaid once the contract term has been reached. Not sure why MTN SP does not allow it. Regarding what speedster said...if you cancel the number the number will be deleted and flagged for recycling. If you love your number I would not suggest that. Perhaps try porting your number over to Vodacom.

After 3 months if you not happy with Vodacom, you will be allowed to port back to MTN as a prepaid client. If i remember correctly, a prepaid number is allowed to port every 3 months. Must double check that.

Try dialing 808 from your cellphone, they should indicate if it is possible.

I just hate MTN with their pathetic service, If I was in your shoes I would drf port to a different SP just to prove a point. They are quick to sign people into contracts, but strangle hold when you want to leave.

OTD, same problem here, i eventually just cancelled and got a new pre-paid number, not an MTN prepaid though :)

I know I can do it that way (porting to another provider and cancelling my contract) but it is somewhat of a hassle and I am not in SA to do it myself.

MTN just pisses me off, if it weren;t for the fact that Vodacom's 3G coverage ends 10 m in front of my house I would gladly move....
