I've come to a friend to copy some files and plugged my SATA HDD (inside a media streamer) into his Vista PC - planning to use it as an external.

But it wouldn't recognise it, so I went into Disk Management and see it picked it up as Dynamic.

From what I see I need to convert to a Basic disk BUT it says i'll lose data. Will I?

I think i've done the process once before and it didnt erase data, but im scared now :/

ja, that happened to me once, but there was nothing on the disc so I could convert it. Not sure what will happen if you convert it with data on it.

Unfortunately you will most likely lose all your data when you covert it to a basic disk. There are some workarounds (google it) but personally I would prefer not risking my precious data :)

Just an update : I backed my data and tried converting ... I would have lost everything :P

Good thing you backed it up then :)

Still remember when my bro tried to merge a partitioned drive back into one drive. He "thought" the data would be fine, but no, it wasn't. Lost all my series, movies, games and worst of all, prsonal stuff like photos which (stupidly) weren't backed up :( Didn't speak to him for a couple days haha

Recently, I run into the same problem as you.:)
I have a SATA harddisk with 320GB, which was converted to a dynamic disk carelessly. Passed a few months, I'm going to install a Linux on the disk, but I found install a new Operating System on dynamic disk will lose all data. I have to convert back to basic disk. Dynamic Disk Converter fine help me to complete this conversion work. If you have the same requirement as me, I recommend you attempt to use it.
