Hi Guys,

I was given a few movies to watch but since they are MP4 format I cannot watch them on my TV so I decided to change them to AVI.I used "Pavtube Free Video DVD Converter Ultimate" to make the change but all I get is the audio ... no video in the conversion.

Can someone guide me in the right direction as to what to use to get this to work.

Thanks

Vic

With a program name like that you shouldn't be surprised when you wind up with a mound of bloatware and spyware.... yeeesh.

Use a proper freeware encoder like xmediarecode

http://www.xmedia-recode.de/en/download.html

Add the video, select the mp4 container, constant bitrate 2500, add to queue and click go.

EDIT yeah handbrake will work too.

That must be one of the most ignorant comments about handbrake. If you like to recommend a program, please do so. Don't talk about stuff you don't know.

I'm pretty sure he was referring to "Pavtube Free Video DVD Converter Ultimate"

But then I am a Super (c) advocate so what do I know? :)

I believe he was referring to the OP's application, not Handbrake.

Not sure why people think handbrake will work. It's designed to convert things into MP4 (or mkv) not the other way around.

You are 100% correct - sorry about that, OP.

Wasn't aware that they'd dropped the Xvid container - shows you when last I used it.

However, you could always revert to the old 0.9.3, which does support AVI conversion. However, I have seen a report that it produces an empty file - let us know if it works for you.

Update: Have just tried 0.9.3 on Windows 8, but an error is thrown.

Also just tried Avidemux, which appears to be working. Under Video Output, select the Mpeg4 ASP (xvid4) codec and, under Audio Output, select MP3 (lame). Then File > Save and choose a destination. Could take a while, depending on the size of the file.

Oh, and expect a larger file...

I would suggest to use Nero Recode, which is much more easy to handle when it comes to transcoding files to another format.

Use this http://www.freemake.com/
Freemake Video Converter

we have lots of clients that purchase LED TV and have the same issue as many of the movies are now in MP4 format
Freemake is excellent to covert them to AVI format, Best of all it is free (Donations is optional)

Why convert? It's just a container anyway. Just rename the file from *.mp4 to *.avi and try to play it. If you have the codec in your system it should play.
