The Billion 7402G is a ADSL modem, but with a bit of trickery you can adapt it for use as a wimax modem, by utilising one of the ethernet ports as a WAN port. Of course billion doesn't want you to know this because they want you to upgrade to a different model. But today I succesfully converted the above 7402G Billion ADSL Router to make use of the ethernet 1 port and utilise it for wimax. Here are the instructions

telnet into you billion
use your normal username & password you would use for the web interface

then issue the following command's
transports delete wanlink

port ethernet set p1vlanmember 0x7
port ethernet set p2vlanmember 0x7
port ethernet set p3vlanmember 0x7
port ethernet set p4vlanmember 0x8

port ethernet set vlan enabled
port ethernet set switchreset true

pppoe add transport wanlink dialout eth 1 ethernet1
pppoe set transport wanlink username yourusername
pppoe set transport wanlink password yourpassword

ip attach ipwan wanlink

system config save

system restart

And now you have a perfectly working router for your wimax installation.

Moklet, you just went from "Grandmaster" to "Grandmaster Guru" in a single post! :D

Q's:

1) It will also work for any PPPoE device (like iBurst), correct?
2) After making these changes to the router, how difficult is it to revert it back to an ADSL router? (Please post instructions)
3) Do you think this telnet trick of yours will work with other ADSL routers as well, e.g. Linksys, Netgear and/or other Billion models?

1. It should as long as it has an ethernet connection
2. I saved my existing setup on the billion router as a backup on my pc. so it is as easy as restoring this backup and it is back to its old state or just do a factory reset
3. I don't know about the other routers, it should work with other billion routerss as well, but depending on the model your vlanmember numbers might be different, but there is a way to get find out what they should be

Finding your vlanmember ids

Access your billion through the web interface goto configuration
goto LAN
goto Bridge Interface
there you will see a couple of check boxes. check the last port (P4 in my case) on the ethernet1 line (you first have to uncheck it on the ethernet line)

Press Apply (Don't save just Apply as we don't want to save these settings)

Telnet into your billion

issue the command port ethernet show

In the resulting text scroll down till you see PXvlanmember = ##(The X will be numbers and the ## are the important numbers)
Note that the ## is in binary format when you issue the commands I gave in the first post you have to convert these to HEX)

You should now have the correct values for the PXvlanmember. Restart your billion and proceed as in post1 with the applicable values for your billion

As long as you make a backup first you can allways go back to your original setup

Why would Billion not want you to know this? They wrote that script.

Most of the Billion 74XX range has E-Wan Firmware released that allows the user to switch between DSL and Making a PPP connection through lan port 1...
