Arrgh this is getting so annoying! I'm on dial-up, so downloading apps is no fun process. I've downloaded so many apps to try and convert videos to wmv and NONE of them work. Either they output a mp4 file or as in the case of ms windows media encoder, saves 2 seconds worth and gives an audio error. The reason I need wmvs is so that I can play movies on my xbox. Right now I'm stuck with the dvd maker app in windows 7 which takes forever to finish. I also tried super, but no luck. Does anyone know of a converter that actually works?

I Use "Any Video Converter" from filehippo, and it works great. Also free....

Which files are you exactly trying to convert?
Firstly if you do have win7 and you HAVE to have them in WMV, download an install windows movie maker for Win 7 ( http://download.live.com/moviemaker ) Quickest way I can think of unless its some funny format.

I stream all my AVI files to my xbox.
Lastly, if windows media center really isn't working nicely for you for streaming. You could try Tversity. Its also free and can transcode files for you to be displayed on the xbox (actually does DVD files as well, but be warned, It takes a while with rather large files)

None of those will work unfortunatly. I am on Windows 7, but having dial-up means that movie maker is too big to download. And they have to be in WMV because my Xbox isn't connected to the net.
That brings me to my next point. I can't stream because firstly my PC is too far from my Xbox. That being said, I could get a longer cable, but my PC and Xbox don't seem to be able to connect to each other anyway, so I'm over that.
So I'll rather just try my luck converting the files. Well, after I've waited an hour for the 15Mb file to download.....

Also you really should get your Xbox connected to the internet. At least at a friends house who has ADSL. There is a Media player update which you need to get that will allow you to play AVI files. Pretty much as soon as your connected to the net and you try stream an AVI file, it will upload the new codec.
Also how old is your XBOX, because there are some awesome changes to the original systems that have been patched BUT make sure you get it to a friend who doesn't mind you blowing about 300-400 megs of his bandwidth if its one of the first xboxes

Its one of the latest ones; got it about a month ago. I connected them directly using a LAN cable, using various combinations of automatic and static ips, but no luck. The closest I got was the xbox seeing my pc, but it couldn't connect.

OK I'm over it now. AVC is, imo, the biggest load of crap, at least for what I'm trying to do. If the sound isn't up to 7 seconds out of sync, then the video is 2 or 3 times too fast. Or it doesn't output the correct resolution, even tho I selected "original". So I think I'll just stick to windows dvd maker. It's slow, but at least it WORKS. Thanks for the help tho guys.

I'll post it here later when I have the energy to traverse the 2m to my pc and wait for it to boot up. But afaik its the same error window it shows for every error. It just doesn't convert to wmv. Any other format works tho. Maybe I should try it in XP...
Ja that might help, seems it may not be compatible with win7, have you tried running it in compatibility mode? have you ticked directshow decode?
