Hi all

I have some xvid file which obviously work fine on my PC, however I would like to be able to play them on my set-top DVD player, which only supports Divx.

What is the easiest way to convert them?

I have searched the net, I really just want to be able to do a straight Xvid to Divx conversion, I have found utilties that convert into VCD, which is acceptable.

Thanks

Tutorial - Convert XviD to DivX
Application: River Past Video Cleaner

XviD is an open source MPEG-4 codec. XviD files are actually AVI files encoded with XviD codec.

To convert from XVID files to DivX with River Past Video Cleaner, you should have DirectX 8.0 or above (9.0 highly recommended), XviD Codec, and DivX Codec installed.

Launch River Past Video Cleaner

xvid is divx, but obviously your dvd player doesn't have all the codecs that you pc has.
Just download the divx packet with divx converter and reconvert it. Sometimes that's all you need to do.

rsachoc - I guessing here but I doubt you have to re-encode - changing the FOURCC of the file to DivX should be enough.

Remember that there is NO set top player than can playback MPEG4 ASP clips with 3 warpoint GCM enabled (most can handle 1 though)

@andress101 - I would not put too much trust in that article as it is dated Apr 2002. A LOT has changed since then.

Check out the hardware forums on Doom9.org for much more info

my dvd recorder doesn't play mpeg files, but once I rename them to avi it plays them fine :D I bet that changing the fourcc code will do the job and make sure the files are with avi extension

Thanks! Didn't realise the article was that old.

Thanks guys

Franna, that page seems to be a pay version, anyone have any suggestions for a freebie way of doing it?

Hmmm, i'm not quite sure what this means? How do I change the FOURCC

A FourCC is a code inside an AVI file denoting what codec it needs for playback. Here is a link off Doom9's site to a FourCC changer prog....
