Cookbook/ Recipe Applications

Maybe with some natural language processing. It would allow people to do mostly free-form input of recipes, as well as allowing for cut-and-paste recognition?

What do you mean by cut-and-paste recognition?
For the moment I'm still trying to figure out where to start and how to slap a plan of action together. :P

I mean so that people can copy/paste any of the millions of recipes on the web (which are in more-or-less similar formats), and have the program pick it up and add it accordingly.

Jip. Ease of use is one of my top priorities. I hate buttons and toolbars. So the plan is to have different options on how the UI will work. Essentially, granny must be able to operate it. This doesn't mean that I'm attempting to make it idiot proof, but just practical.

...all I need now is a sponsor. lol

Well that's why free-form input would be a major advantage?

Sponsor... ? lol...

The building blocks of a recipe isn't complicated. So to make whatever you give it (free-form) into a functional recipe for this application isn't hard.

Jip. Code can't write itself... and I haven't found a job yet that will allow me to develop this (in their time or in my free time)
Although I'm quite talented in many fields, getting any of them to sustain me through freelancing is a lot harder than I thought.
Hence the wish for a sponsor... :)

I would like the following:

- If I cook for 2, 6 or 20 people - I want the recipe to automatically calculate the correct amount of ingredients.
- It would be great if it can somehow link to Woolies/Pick&pay for home deliveries (maybe in future)
- Visuals are good, I would actually rather make something that I can see what the results would be instead of just an ingredient list and recipe.
- I want to be able to send my grocery list to my cellphone so that I have it with me when I'm going to do shopping
- and for the not so eager chefs ... a shortcut to Mr Delivery/Butlers and others
- an option to do weekly menu planning and items list for shopping (saving the menu some how so that you can after a couple of weeks choose week 2 again)
- If you really want to reach a different market - having recipes according to your bloodtype (Eat right for your Type - book)
- Links to local organic markets / speciality shops and the specials they've got
- Opening/closing times of local supermakets
- and if you really want to impress me, a list of suitable wines that would go well with the dish you're preparing

I would like the following:
Thanks for the input :) The shopping options is definitely a direction to go, but it won't be in the first few releases. I'll first have to get the ball rolling.
You just gave me the idea of calling the Application something down the lines of Ouma. Although a very big part of it is the actual eCookbook part, most of it's power is in what it does to manage it all.

Suitable wines...? Now there's a challenge. I'll keep the thought on the backburner. ;)

I think the way to get a sponsorship is to somehow link it to the company/companies (I'm thinking of Woolies or Pick&pay who already has a home delivery service, what if you can link to their specials, order the ingredients direct from them and have them delivered)

Although that might work in future releases... I don't think it's the best foot to start on. For now, I'll just have to make due with what I can. There's quite a few interesting apps on SourceForge that might save me a lot of time. And as this will be Open Source as well, I doubt if there will be any issues. Who knows, I might even find someone on there that's willing to help. :)

This is a great idea. It would come in VERY handy.

Since it will be open source, if it can be made to run on Android, have touch-screen capability and sync/update via wifi, putting this on an Apad (dirt cheap) and mounting it on the kitchen wall will make it so much easier than recipe books.

Then you can just use your phone/computer to update the software.

A little healthy compitition is always good. lol. From what I understand, their app isn't quite the same. But at least it will speed things along with my app when I [-]steal[/-] borrow ideas from them.

That's the plan! :)
What's an Apad?

Apad - would presume an Android Pad.
Correct me if wrong ;)
