On the same shelves where one finds butter, margarine, etc, the supermarkets used to stock 'cooking liquid' . I think the brand name was Flora ...

It seems this range has been discontinued, because our Pick and Pay does not stock this anymore.

I loved it, because it was wonderful for (shallow) frying foods instead of using oil.

Anyone know of a place where this can still be purchased ? :)

Frankly, I'm appalled in your culinary taste today. The awful "cooking liquid" is either a rank smelling commercial Ghee that comes in containers the size of buckets - Spar has them. It is in the refrigerated section and looks waxy but liquifies at room temperature.
The other "cooking oils" have been pulled as they are all coronary Artery clogging death sentences- they consisted of pure hydrogenated vegetable oils which are a big no no these days as companies quickly dump the offending stuff and pretend that they never used it.

No it was not ghee. Ghee is sold seperately and is clearly marked as such. Oh, and by the way, IMO all cooking oils / liquids are bad for you - some are just worse than others. Even though olive oil is healthier for the heart than sunflower oil, it is quite fattening.

The cooking liquid I was looking for was in fact OLIVE OIL cooking liquid, for those of you who extol its virtues.

+1.
the health of an oil depends on it's fat type and smoke point.
the wikipedia table is very helpful.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cooking_fat

i don't really see the point of frying with hydrogenated fat personally.
it's hydrogenated so that it can spread, that's the way it should stay :)
other than the fact that it's less messy and easier to pour.

EDIT: hosehead, not all hydrogenated fat is bad - most spreads use partial hydrogenation, rather than full hydrogenation, hence the statement "low in saturated fats" on the side of a flora margarine tub. most of these give a breakdown on the package as to the fat content and type of fat.

Woolworths stocks an excellent and affordable olive oil for cooking, aptly named: Cooking Olive Oil. It sells for around R30 per bottle so MUCH less costly than Extra Virgin which means you can save that for your salads and use the cooking one in the pan. It also does not burn as easily as EV.

Whatever this 'cooking liquid' is you describe it sounds horrendous. Most likely a byproduct of some even more hideous manufacturing process that someone decided they could sell instead of dumping.

The one I referrred to, was superb for cooking/shallow frying! Nevertheless, I'll try the Cooking Olive Oil you describe - I'd really like something that does not burn as easily.

Thanks

He is referring to Stork Culinesse. I can't remember if you get another brand though.

That stuff was crap - if it's off the shelves, then good riddance.

blu - not all oil is bad for you, and in small quantities there really is nothing wrong with oil. And if you want to cook at high temperatures without your oil burning, then this cooking liquid crap is not what you want. You want ground nut oil...

If your food was coming out oily, then you were using too much oil. Simple as that to be honest...
