Hi gents

So the apartment we moved into has an electric hob and oven but we prefer gas. Is there a cost effective was to implement gas burners for cooking, without permanently changing the setup of the (very small) kitchen. No space for a full gas stove/oven. Some sort of countertop appliance we can place on top of the hob?

Why not just take the hob out and put a gas one in? the oven doesnt use much power, its the plates that do.
Its easy to change a hob so it can be changed back again later.
 
Yes.

Go to any camping section of [PnP/Game/Checkers/etc] and look for a single or double gas hob.

Buy a large sheet of wood to put on top of the oven & put the gas hob on the wood.

You'll probably want to put tinfoin on the wood before you put the hob on, to keep the wood clean.

edit : post above sounds much better and is safer. Mine is the redneck hillbilly method :D
 
I don't know how difficult this is (it'll have to be the same size!), but it's they way i was leaning myself. We can take the hob with us when we move.
I'm going to have to find a place for the gas bottle though.
 
Depending on your insurance, you may not be able to install a gas hob without a gas certificate. Keep that in mind.
 
If you install a gas hob and the place burns down, then be prepared to be sued by the owner for unauthorized modifications.
 
You can install the gas bottle yourself as long as it is within 2 meters of the hob. If it is further or needs to be routed outside then it requires a certified installer that will give you a certificate.

I found myself in the same situation in a rented house and what I did was install a 3kg Cadac with a stove plate on the table next to the 1,000 year old+ Electric cooker and on the floor , I placed a 7kg Cadac with a stove plate attached. The oven I used for baking until the doors fell open and refused to close. So I sent the asbestos leaking relic on the back of a truck with the landlords blessings to a landfill somewhere. Now I have only the two cadacs and I find I don't need anything else. I'll look into a halogen cooker oven as these are table top models , small but efficient and dirt cheap.-so I can bake small quantities instead of asking my neighbour to use his oven... My kitchen may not be pretty but it's very functional.
I'm working on a deal for TotalGAZ 6 burner with extra wide oven (gas oven) for just under 4k and while you are supposed to keep the gas bottle outside you can get a line installed for 1500.
Gas is the way to cook but for the expense, induction stoves are also fantastic to complement Gas.
 
To limit cost, I ended up getting a Cadac 2 plate stove and 9kg gas bottle. Whether it'll be hot enough, etc, remains to be seen.
 
got the alva one from game. plus gas bottle, L shaped valve. i must still get the pipe. comes to just under R1000.
 
I recently bought a gas braai with a side burner. Only just realised that i can use it for breakfast! WIN!

Instant heat! Low cost! Gas is king.
