Hi

Being new to linux, I sometimes wonder what kinda opensource software I am missing cause I am just starting. Cool apps that made your life a lot better.

Maybe we can post all the cool apps you have used, or what you know off, so that new guys like me, can have a list to go through and see what cool stuff there is out there.

Even some tuning tips out there (but I think then it is best to also state the distro you are working on)

I would have to say, so far the best stuff I have found was:

Krusader (File management app for kde)
dvd::copy (dvd ripper)

(Mods maybe we can make this a sticky, so that we can keep on posting here)

oops, uhm yes, was just testing you folks ha...ha....uhm ha

Tilda
Brings down a "console" from the top of the screen with the tilde button (~), think Quake 3, through which one can type in terminal commands.

Workrave
Useful to stop yourself from overworking. Times how long you work for and the number of keystrokes you make and forces you to take short breaks. I average around 25000 keystrokes a day whilst at work :(

Sunbird
An opensource calendar that is part of the Mozilla desktop suite (Firefox, Thunderbird, etc.). Can synchronise with your phone or laptop or PDA.

Eterm
A very useful terminal application that can almost "seamlessly" integrate into your desktop background.

Pidgin
Previously GAIM, allows for one to keep all IM contacts (AIM, MSN, Google, ICQ, etc.) in one place.

My Traceroute (mtr)
Very awesome traceroute GUI application.

Nice, I use yakuake, which does the same thing.

The one app that allowed me to move full time to linux was evolution. As much as I dislike it , it lets me pull my mail from the exchange server at work. Would much rather use tbird and sunbird, but there it is.

amarok, obivously. Though you're unlikely to have missed it.

Of course I didn't miss it, I just figured it was so blindingly obvious there was no need to mention it :D

I find that Ubuntu (Kubuntu in my case) is the best. User preference too, but Ubuntu IS the most uesr-friendly, etc (Let's not get into the flavour fight again).

I've tried serveral dvd programs and find K3b the best.
Amorak is by far the best multimedia player and is as powerful as any in Windows (maybe even more)
AptOnCD is an awesome repository-download backup tool that iso's all your downloads to use on several workstations
There are so many applications available for Linux that it will take an eternity to mention them all...
