Coolest Looking Mazda - 2015 RX-Vision Concept

The R26B used in the LeMans 787B put out 840.61 Nm of torque at 6500 RPM.
That's a lot of torque for a 2.6 litre engine.
The torque curve on unmodified rotaries is also fairly flat compared to a normal piston engine IIRC.

With very trick, variable length throttle body trumpets. The 787B engine was like no other rotary.

A rotary not my favourite and will never own one, is still on my list of amazing iconic engines. Would be amazing if they can modernise the engine to be reliable , better fuel economy and resolve the oil consumption.

Few engines have a unique sound as a 2jz GTE, bmw straight 6, Subaru boxer 4 and the rotary.
20b just amazing when fitted with a turbo. Seen a few 6 rotors on youtube. My word the sound

Mazda’s rotary to return as an EV range-extender?

It looks like the rotary is finally finding its footing but it will not be coming back as a sportscar.

Since the demise of the RX-8, Mazda has been struggling to revive its rotary engine despite it having a dedicated development team for the department. Last month we detailed the timeline of Mazda’s rotary rumours but if Automotive News’s report is anything to go by, it looks like said department has finally found its footing.

According to Mazda’s global powertrain head Mitsuo Hitomi, the rotary may be finding new life as a range extender for future EV models as previewed in the Mazda2 Rotary Engine Range Extender from 2013 which featured a 0,33-litre rotor re-purposed to supply power to an electric motor.

Hitomi-san stated that the rotary engine has the ideal characteristics to act as a range extender thanks to its compact, powerful and low-vibration characteristics. It also provides Mazda with a reason to keep the program alive in an automotive world that is now heavily clamping down on inefficient engines; something a conventional rotary is notable for.

Mazda is planning on introducing an EV and hybrid model by 2019. The EV will come in two forms; one will be a pure EV while the other will possess a range extender much like the current BMW i3. Hitomi-san goes on to say that these two variants will target two separate markets.

The pure EV will be intended for Japan, Europe and China where average travelling distances are relatively short while the range extender will be directed towards other markets where the distances are longer.

Furthermore, it has been made apparent that Mazda has already developed a vehicle architecture for the Eco-friendly models with a floor-plan that can accommodate batteries. Any future developments on this architecture from this point onward is expected to be in conjunction with Toyota given the two brands’ recent joint EV development deal.

As for that performance rotary that everyone is hoping for? Hitomi-san has confirmed that a dedicated team is working on developing a bigger rotary mill but it’s unlikely that this will be introduced anytime soon because there is a challenge in making a sensible business case for it. Getting the technology correct has not been a massive hurdle.

Rotary engine making comeback, as range extender

Although the rotary engine’s comeback as a range extender has been rumoured for some time now, Mazda has now practically confirmed it through an interview with a Dutch publication.

Mazda’s European sales vice president Martijn ten Brink has told AutoRAI.nl that the company is planning to introduce a fully electric car in 2019, and that buyers with range anxiety would be able to opt for a ‘range extender’ version featuring a ****el motor.

According to Martijn, the single-disc rotary engine - which is flat-mounted and no bigger than a shoebox - will operate purely as a generator to feed the car’s electric motor once the battery has been depleted. He also claimed that the ****el is “vibration free” to the point where occupants will not even notice when it kicks in.

The forthcoming electric car will be built on a new compact car platform that Mazda is developing and it’s expected to be about the size of a Mazda3.

However, Mazda is certainly not giving up on internal combustion engines, with Martijn insisting that these will remain an important part of the mix even in 15 to 25 years from now, albeit increasingly forming part of petrol-electric hybrid drivetrains.

Mazda RX-Vision GT3 Concept

Mazda's new virtual racing car, the Mazda RX-Vision GT3 Concept, will be available for download in Gran Turismo Sport from May 22, 2020. Jointly developed with Polyphony Digital Inc., the RX-Vision GT3 Concept is Mazda's newest virtual race car in Sony Interactive Entertainment's PlayStation®4 driving simulation title, Gran Turismo Sport.

Based on the Mazda RX-Vision Concept car that was unveiled at the 2015 Tokyo Motor Show, the GT3 Concept is modified in accordance with FIA GT3 race car regulations, and also complies with Gran Turismo Sport's own regulations in its Gr.3 category.

While the original cabin and doors are maintained in accordance with GT3 regulations, the front and rear track width has been expanded and wheel arch width increased. A large bonnet air outlet improves both aerodynamics and engine bay cooling, and front and rear spoilers and a rear diffuser increase downforce. In addition, both ride height and overall vehicle height have been reduced to optimise aerodynamic performance. The removal of heavy materials and superfluous interior parts has resulted in weight reduction and a lower centre of gravity, and, equipped with a front midships-mounted, next-generation Skyactiv-R, 4-rotor 570 PS rotary engine, the car boasts an ideal 48:52 front-rear weight distribution.

As with all Mazda vehicles, painstaking attention to cockpit ergonomics place an

My life’s work’: Mazda exec determined to put RX-Vision into production

Mazda’s head of global design says he’s determined to see the RX-Vision concept car reach production.

Speaking to Autocar, the Japanese firm’s design chief, Ikuo Maeda, said he was keen to “realise” the show car as a full production model.

“I have a 43:1 scale model of the RX-Vision sitting on my desk. It is my life’s work to realise this model to a production car,” Maeda-san told the publication.

Revealed as long ago as October 2015 at the Tokyo Motor Show, the RX-Vision has long been thought to be a preview of a new RX-9, which would come as a successor to the rotary-powered RX-7 and RX-8.
