Short version:
I would like to know: is it OK to mount my iPhone on the air vent of my car's aircon?

Long version:
My issue is that I use my phone as a GPS device while driving and have it mounted on a suction cup cradle, leaving it exposed to direct sunlight. It is also charging while in the car. After a while the screen goes darker, making it difficult to see the route. This, I found was because of the phone heating up.

I then have to remove the phone from the crandle and cool it down by holding it directly in the aircon air flow. Not exactly the safest operation while driving.

The other option is to set the aircon to blow air from below the front windshield so more cool air reaches the phone (but not me...)

I've seen various types of cradles which will allow you to mount the phone directly on the air vent grille. Is this a good idea though to have the phone permanently, directly in the cool air?

Totally fine. The aircon isn't going to take your phone down to the type of cold that will cause a problem. This may actually be quite beneficial, especially if charging the phone as it will keep the battery below the point where charging is harmful to the battery.

Cold air is always better for electronic devices (and their batteries) but what is not good is to repeatedly jump between cold and hot.

yep I agree cold always good. And not to jump between two coz of evaporation condensation

Just be careful when you take it out the car on a hot humid day condensation may be a problem

I also sent the question Steve Gibson and he chose to answer it in this week's Security Now podcast.

Bottom line: L-ion batteries don't like heat, keeping it cool is a great idea.
