Johannesburg - A police reservist was arrested for allegedly killing a doctor and raping his woman friend in Kanyamazane, Mpumalanga police said on Wednesday.

The doctor, Thandokuhle Mkhumane, was with his companion in their car at 02:00 on April 2 when an armed man approached them, said Captain Leonard Hlathi.

"He pointed the gun at Mkhubane and demanded money. When he told him he did not have any, the gunman drove their car off to a dam near Tekwane where he forced Mkhumane inside the boot before repeatedly raping the woman inside the car."

He afterwards removed the doctor from the boot, forcing him and the woman to lie on the ground.

"Mkhumane was then shot two times in the head and died at the scene," said Hlathi.

The man drove to a filling station with the woman, leaving the body behind. However, the woman managed to escape.

Later, the car was found abandoned next to a shopping complex in Kwanyamazane.

Hlathi said police recovered the state-owned firearm used in the murder and a cellphone belonging to the woman.

Investigations revealed that the accused was a reserve constable stationed at Kwanyamazane. It was also discovered that the constable was under investigation on an attempted murder charge, he said.

So how the hell does a police reservist get hold of a state-owned firearm without booking on duty? And what idiot lets a reservist under investigation for attempted murder book on duty?

The SAPS should go now and arrest the commander of that police station as an accomplice.

Wow, really shocking!

but what else can you expect when they allow such a person to walk around with a gun

They should make an example of him.

Pity he cant do the hemp fandango

One could say "Ah, just another, murder or rape". But this is becoming totally out of control, especially when a cop is involved. You you cannot even trust your police!

[sarcasm]Well that's something you don't hear about every day[/sarcasm]

Its scary knowing that these are the kind of ppl that the public has to rely on. Looks like they're letting just about anyone sign up these days.

It's sad that these weekend warriors give real reservists a bad name.

I agree

The SAPS needs a shakeup from the top down

I also feel it sometimes is too easy to become a reservist. I dunno maybe R/SGT can give some insight as to whether there are psychological tests involved when joining the reservists? I was a full member of the SAPS and can't remember exactly if there were some kind of mechanism to establish whether a person is of a sound mind when I joined as it was many years ago.

And I know of at least one reservist that was issued a permanent firearm back then because he received death threats so it does happen.

It is a scary thought but one has to remember that this was one guy. There is no reason to loose faith in the people you should rely on because of one guy. Yes I know there are more but at least this one was identified and removed from the bunch, although it was at a very high price.

Hi Slowcheetah

There are psychological tests which have to be completed and many of the possible bad apples are weeded out through the course of training as well as the length of time the whole process takes due to all the red tape.

But some still manage to slip through.

Very few reservist manage to get firearms on their 108 and those that do are usually in the flying squad or similar units, but the numbers are few and far between.

Most reservists get their firearm form the station when they book on, but depending on the control at a station this could be meaningless.
