Johannesburg - Attacks on police officers in Atteridgeville and Tembisa at the weekend have prompted a manhunt, Gauteng police said on Sunday.
Police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Lungelo Dlamini said that a policeman was killed on Friday in Atteridgeville.
“A 46-year-old warrant officer was attacked by three unknown men who were wearing balaclavas and demanded his vehicle while he was parked outside a house.
“In the ensuing struggle to take the car, the police officer was shot and killed and the suspects took his vehicle, a new VW Golf 6, and drove away. He was shot in the upper body and died at the scene,” Dlamini said.
In another incident, two police officers were attacked in the early hours of Saturday by two armed men in Tembisa.
“While the officers were waiting to pick one of their colleagues, they confronted two suspicious men whom they suspected to be in possession of a stolen a vehicle.
“There was a shoot-out between the suspects and the police. A policewoman was shot several times and wounded. The suspects managed to escape and they are still at large. [She] was taken to the hospital in a serious but stable condition. Her colleague was not injured,” Dlamini added.
