Cape Town - A policeman is in a stable condition after being shot on Sunday morning during routine patrols in KwaMashu in KwaZulu-Natal, provincial police have confirmed.

Flying Squad members pulled over a car in Malandela Road at about 09:00, Brigadier Jay Naicker said.

“As the members approached the vehicle the suspects opened fire, striking one of the [officers] in the neck,” he said.

The gang, comprising three or four suspects, then sped off.

The warrant officer was airlifted to hospital and is in a stable condition, Naicker confirmed.

Prayers for slain Durban cop

Durban - The family of veteran Durban police officer Ashok Ramsakkan, who was shot and wounded by AK47-wielding gunmen in KwaMashu last week, was at his bedside when he died on Monday night.

Ramsakkan died in hospital after days in the intensive care unit.

The policeman was shot in the neck when his patrol car was sprayed with automatic gunfire.

Provincial police commissioner Mmamonnye Ngobeni sent her condolences to Ramsakkan's family.

"We send our heartfelt condolences to the family of Warrant Officer Ramsakkan. You will be in our thoughts and prayers during this difficult time of your lives. We pray that the love of God enfolds the family, friends and colleagues during this period of mourning," she said.

"We are confident that this case will be investigated effectively and those responsible for this callous act will be brought to book.

"The attack on police officers, either on or off-duty, must be condemned by all law-abiding citizens as it is not only barbaric, but also robs the country of SAPS personnel who have the responsibility to fight crime and protect the citizens of our country," Ngobeni said.
