The head of the police's forensic science laboratory has sued three lower ranking officers for defamation, City Press reported on Sunday.
They had blown the whistle on alleged corruption and mismanagement on his watch, according to the report.
Lt-Gen Johannes Phahlane was also suing the Police and Prisons Civil Rights Union (Popcru), the newspaper reported.
In papers filed in the High Court in Pretoria, Phahlane reportedly demanded that Popcru Gauteng secretary Matsemela Matsemela, and the three officers retract their statement that he was to blame for acts of corruption at the laboratory.
His lawyer Mervyn Dendy told City Press Matsemela and the three officers had "defamed" Phahlane.
They had also "injured his reputation" by holding a press conference in September, at which they called on national police commissioner Riah Phiyega to fire him, said Dendy.
At the press conference, Popcru reportedly claimed that disciplinary charges were brought against the three officers soon after the union delivered a dossier about the laboratory to Parliament's police portfolio committee and Phiyega.
In the dossier, Popcru and the whistle-blowers claimed widespread corruption, nepotism and theft were behind massive backlogs at the lab, and placed the blame on Phahlane, City Press reported.
According to the newspaper, Popcru had rejected Phahlane's lawsuit as a "cheap publicity-seeking stunt that will not win in court".
