Copper degradation - we can't help you

I have the same issue. Copper degradation, dropping sync, very infrequent line noise. I have to sync at somewhere between 11Mbps and 16MBps, and ASSIA determines where to draw the line. Currently seeing 14MBps from a line that used to be a stable 20Mbps.

Will they fix it? "No, the loop is 1.4km, and that's just too long."

Will they run fibre? "No, because we'd have to do it for everyone else as well."

Can they shorten my loop? "No, that has to be planned for."

Ask them to switch you to spare pair if available.

Tried that already, there isn't a spare available. I don't think any of the techies particularly wants to deal with the rats nest of wires at the end of the street either.

And my line is fixed. Finally.

A bloke in an OpenServe van showed up, listened to the line, buggered off for about an hour and a half and came back reporting success. No idea what he done, but its finally over. I have a working ADSL line at long last.

I think alot of these Telkom techs have no idea what to do.

It just pisses me off to think how many months of struggle it was for a mere two hour fix. ****, I was so happy when I logged into my router to see normal working line stats that I offered to buy the technician a nice bottle of whiskey for finally ending this nightmare. The "technicians" before him, ****... they're not fit to wear their uniforms.

So I moved. To the other side of town. 800m from the exchange.

It's even worse now. I'm going to do my ****ing nut. I'm stuck with the same goddamn problem. I can't begin to describe to you exactly how much I ****ing hate Telkom right now. I'm so ****ing angry.
