Copper theft increased in April to 176 tonnes worth R12.5 million, the SA Chamber of Commerce and Industry said on Thursday.

It marked an increase of 23 tonnes from March, the chamber said.

Compared to April 2013, copper theft had risen 26 percent.

"The risk is that the recent upward movements in copper theft can become entrenched, rather than adhere to the general downward trend of the last two years," it added.

This feels like Groundhog Day. The copper theft is an ongoing scourge which gets maximum attention from everyone except the police, hawks and politicians. Or do it seems. No political will to tackle crime.

And Telkom in their wisdom are about to shut down their cable theft section as part of their retrenchment exercise.

Go figure.
