I got a call from a Telkom guy about coming to my residence to change my line from copper to new generation. Not exactly sure what that means, what he needs to do. Could this be some kind of scam?

Well, it's copper or fibre if they change the line.

Don't see anything else they frequently use !

Thought it's probably that. The thing is I never asked for it. Was wondering if anyone else had this kind of experience.

I'll bet that it is a contracted sales consultant who will try to "up sell" your current product.

He/she will offer you either a 20Mbps ADSL product or an "up to 40Mbps" VDSL product.

Both are copper based - from your house to a MSAN/ISAM unit. From that unit to the exchange (Central Office) there will be a optic fibre connection.

Listen but sign NOTHING!!!

My area has been upgraded to 10mbps speed. I had the calls and they came to see me, it was a 24 month contract limited data and a free modem as the old modem/router can't handle the speed . When they went through the details they couldn't match a line and a 150gb account from Afrihost.
When asked about seeing the deal on the website they said it is only offered to selected clients.
I asked can they upgrade my speed and was told to go to the telkom store.

The only thing I got out of this was the exchange was upgraded to a 10 meg speed.

So listen to Mickeyd

I've seen the same misleading thing advertised in the UK with BT when I was there a few months ago. The marketing makes it sound as if they will upgrade your connection at home to a fibre connection (i.e. FTTH) but as MickeyD has pointed out they are actually only upgrading the connection from the MSAN to the exchange to fibre and you still have copper coming into your house.

You absolutely right MickeyD! They tried to get me to sign something I didn't want.

I think the cables to my pole are so old they are lead-covered. One Telkom techie brought me a piece to show me, it was cloth-covered and had a lead sheath. It was the cable installed in the 1920's when the suburb was being laid out

What was the offer? I am curious.

Told the guy I was on a 4Mb line with 100GB cap. He wanted to get me to buy a 10Mb line with 50GB cap from Telkom. Said I would "look it over".

I got a deal last year November, I had a 4Meg (never got pass 3Meg) line with uncap download, and some package for unlimited fixedline calls, wife running business from home - most of the clients have telkom line, my ISP is Telkom as well (R900 p.m.).

The new deal was:
- 10Meg Line - 50Gig cap, this was later upgraded to 100Gig (all customers had their cap increased)
- DSL Wifi router
- Huawei mobile modem / router
- Office 365 (I think I got 2)
- 2 x voice SIMs (loaded with 100min p.m.)
- 2 x data SIMS (loaded with 1Gig data p.m.)
- Unlimited landline minutes / calls

This was for R990p.m.
