Gauteng traffic police arrested a man for "flying" at over 200km/h on the N4 on Wednesday morning.

"In order to catch up with the BMW, they had to travel at a speed of 238km/h... but could not get closer to measure his speed," spokesperson Busaphi Nxumalu said in a statement.

He was first spotted near Bronkhorstspruit following complaints about his behaviour. Near the Donkerhoek weighing station he reduced his speed and officers managed to clock him at 183km/h, the slowest he had travelled since they started monitoring his speed. He was eventually pulled over after the Hans Strijdom off-ramp and arrested.

"He could only say he was sorry and was rushing for a meeting in Pretoria."

The 27-year-old was charged with reckless or negligent driving, released on R1000 bail and expected to appear in the Pretoria Magistrate's Court soon.

With the amount of money the cops make off speed fines etc........why have they not purchased faster cars to catch the bad boys?

When they do purchase faster cars to catch these guys everyone cries about it. So they cannot really win, buy expensive cars and you get lambasted for wasting money, don't buy expensive cars and people wonder why you don't have expensive cars :D

Umm no because cops cant drive, I remember years back the got 30 odd new BMWs and smashed most of them on Lap 1 of a Parade lap.

Take the guy's license away. He's clearly not responsible enough to be behind the wheel of a car and is a danger to others on the road.

Throw the prick in jail

Police cars are fast, they just get weighed down by bullet proof vests.

Is it true that cops try to provoke a dice with motorists using an unmarked GTI on the N4?

Should they all be driving around in supercars?

Besides, sometimes it's just not safe for other motorists for them to speed to the extent necessary to catch someone. They'll rather stop him later...

Sounds like a BS story to me.

It is. But they certainly don't look after their cars. Especially metro cops...

I do remember the cops getting BMWs (325i's ?) and that quite a few of them got smashed.

There is some substance to that story.

Those cars were not second-hand, it was brand new E36 BMW 325i's if I recall correctly - but they did not last long.

The figure of 12 cars seem to stick in my mind, cannot remember correctly.

I remember it because I was quite jealous !!!

I can't remember if they were new or second hand, either way, I saw them standing on the side of the highway the day before the handover when I drove home. The next morning after the handover the news reports came in about the accident when they were driving the cars to the stations.

Yes, but there were also many accidents later in the line of duty.

Not everyone can control a car properly at 200kph, certainly not most metro cops.

BMW probably just gave up on that idea !

AFAIK they were driving in a convoy to the stations and not even at 200km/h.

But I do agree that not all SAPS or Metro cops can drive at 200km/h, even after they went for lessons, but then also get those who can.

The point is that it wasn't on a parade lap that most of the cars were destroyed...
