Johannesburg - Police shot dead a robber in Brenthurst, east of Johannesburg, on Wednesday afternoon, a Gauteng police spokesperson said on Thursday.
"The suspects started shooting at the police who returned fire. One of the suspects... was fatally shot and three more arrested," said Lieutenant Colonel Tshisikhawe Ndou.
The shoot-out erupted after the gang robbed a business in Brakpan. Police believe armed men followed an employee of the Brakpan business back to his workplace after seeing him withdraw money from a local bank.
At gunpoint, they ordered a security guard at the business to open the gate. The robbers fired what Ndou described as a warning shot at the worker who had drawn money. A second shot fired by the thugs hit the employee in the foot.
The robbers fled with an undisclosed amount of cash, but the employee followed them, noted the makes of two getaway cars, and alerted the police.
In Brenthurst, police spotted the getaway cars and chased them, but the robbers opened fire, Ndou said.
In the ensuing shoot-out one of the robbers was killed, but no police officers were wounded.
He said that one of the getaway cars, a VW Polo, was later found abandoned.
Three men, aged between 28 and 35, were arrested and were expected to be charged with business robbery and attempted murder.
