Johannesburg - One gunman was shot dead and another wounded in a shout-out with police after a house robbery in Yeoville on Sunday.

Johannesburg police spokesperson Captain Julia Claassen said police were called to the scene of a house robbery and upon their arrival three armed who fleeing from a house in Yeoville jumped into a black Nissan X-Trail and tried to flee.

The suspected robbers started shooting at police. Police returned fire and killed one man, another was injured and rushed to hospital under police guard.

A third gunman managed to escape and was still at large.

The vehicle was hijacked in Durban earlier this month.

The wounded man would be charged with house robbery, attempted murder and hijacking.
