Cops lose 3 800 firearms, says report

The 'Azanian People's Organisation's' (rofl) no-guns campaign made the headlines recently when they stated their case and chanted "Only the Police should carry guns".
Interesting that the president of this orginisation is apparently a gunowner himself, go figure.

Anyway, as has been previously mentioned the coppers themselves have a despicable record when it comes to their own weapons.

In an audit contained in the South African Police Service 2006/07 annual report, he found 3 856 firearms were reported "lost, stolen or robbed from personnel throughout the country" during the 12 months up to March 31 this year.

Noseweek ran a more than one story recently about Police in DBN renting out their weapons even in extreme cases. Some officer had 'lost' more than one weapon and was still on active duty.

I was chatting to a policeman recently that conducts hearings where they classify a cop unfit to carry a gun. He mentioned that some guns get left in restrooms when they go to the loo, they get up and leave and forget their gun behind. How incomptetant is that? But if i want a license for a gun, i have to waite 6 + months and submit a lengthy motivation why i may need it.

Lost? My arse, those weapons were not lost. I have a very good friend in the police, he has served something like ten years and he is now emigrating to OZ because he cannot stand the blatant corruption, racism and double standards in the police.

He estimates that 75% of all our coppers are corrupt, our police force is a disgrace, the only rivals are our public health system and the army. Many of the BEE chappies don't have the right qualifications or/and don't fit the physical requirements during training.

Despite their chances of promotion being virtually zero there are still a few white guys trying to join the police, a recent grp of recruits had a few white guys mixed in and guess how many were selected to join training? ZERO

We had an armed robbery at my house not too long ago, police arrived about 45 mins after we phoned and the fingerprint guys less than an hour later.They found our car after a chase that ended in a crash after they shot out the car's tire.The injured fugituve still managed to evade justice tho. I recieved 1 call after the incident ant that was the last time I heasd anything from the police.

There are still a few good okes left in the police and I have great respect for them especially because of the conditions that they work in but I feel that our police service will only deteriorate untill they bring back a merit based system.

I am also beginning to think that these new weapon laws are an attempt to disarm whites, many laugh at this but we all know the border situation and we all know that there is no chance of a gun free South-AFRICA

Why else would they take weapons away from law-abiding citizens in a country with a crime epidemic? Criminals don't register their guns so this law does NOTHING to prevent crime.

Boohooo nonsense, support their habits maybe, and even if they were committing this serious crime to support their families, selling/renting your firearm to a criminal makes you an accomplice to the crime they commit in my books.
Accountability, there is none.

Incompetent? I think not. It's a good excuse, that's all. There will be much more of an, erm, stink, should the police fellow admit to selling the gun to someone...

6 Months? Sure. My licences just came through, 16 months after submission. Five years after I bought them because the first application got rejected under the old law, but that's another story (check the archives).

Oh and my renewals came through too, 21 months after submission.

It's all a sad state of affairs. I agree with Toko that we are being disarmed subtely. Then you get some people who voluntarily hand their weapons in. Yet all the illegal AK47's and Makarov pistols braught into the country during the "struggle" are still out there. I have joined clubs etc to keep my weapons and i have acquired a few more since, but it is a pain in the butt. I won't give up my sport and hooby because of a difficult law and there may be a little break in at my house when things come to a point where we are forced to hand our weapons in.

Your friend seems very negative based on your post. Would love to know what station this is, it seems they have serious issues there.

There is many cops that are not folling in this category, infact I'd rather believe this statement if the percentage was turned around. I also believe that the problem at his station might be very grim and now he believes it is the same at all stations.

Two statements that I absolutely agree with. I miss the old days when ranks had a proper meaning. When a Sergeant was respected and a Warrant Officer was feared. Today the police are run by BEE academics that never went through the ranks and have no understanding of what makes of a policeman.

The police lacks serious leadership by policemen that understands the job. The sad thing is that the situation that we have currently is going to get allot worse, because the good cops that knows what they are doing and that wants to be policemen for the right reasons are leaving because it is unbearable and the salaries are shocking.

What I would like to know is. Exact detail on how these firearms got missing, and who is taking responsibility for it! What disciplinary steps are being taken against the cops that where negligent, and how many of them are in jail for selling firearms. Explaining that they have no idea where these firearms are will not let it go away as it simply is impossible not to know where they are. Firearms are signed out and detailed report backs are being done on even the ammunition. IMO the police has some explaining to do to us the public, their employers! Explain yourselves to the bosses!

Have you read the minutes of Parliament, where the SAPS "explain" things to the MPs? Regular laugh a minute, I tell ya.

The SAPS are paying out millions of our tax money to people who win cases of negligence and dereliction of duty against them. Why should they care? Trevor is getting more tax money in than ever.

Edit : BTW what happened to the Defence Force people who "lost" all those weapons a number of months ago? Answers longer than seven letters on the back of a postcard please.
